Amherst's CS is strong, many bulls live here, esp. in networking
and IPIR, could be in top 5
EE's microwave also ranks within top 5
CE ranking ok, around 20, niche 1st tier and definitely not top tier
other directions are soso, still good enough for industry jobs
but for faculty positions, need some struggle to get in to
schools overall ranking top 50. |

No matter CE and EE microwave, it is impossible for them to rank within

related jobs -- which school weighs better if one has very high area ranking
in the area that I'm interested in and the other has a good overall ranking
(20-30)? I don't want to move anywhere and the surrounding schools only offer
these limited choices. So which one is better? Or it doesn't really matter
because you will end up with a job anyway and it's your job performance that
counts? |

concerned, it's not very competitive. (they think wash u. is just a medical
school--even though its b school ranks not bad--but certainly not in research)
of course, it really depends on yourself.
By the way, what's the use of usnews ranking? Certainly it's not very
applicable in most chinese students' cases. Of course, if you just want to
tell people in China "I went to a top 10 university in US", that's a different
story.

首先我搜集到了各个法律法规中有机污染物的标准值。比如美国标准化学有害物苯在土
壤中的限值是3。加拿大是10。
我想把每个国家按照有机有害物标准值大小来rank一下并且每个给予score，分越高代
表这个国家的法律法规越严格，即标准值比较小。比较保守。
我想到了一个数学方法，这个和各个国家人类发展指数rank类似，就是(该国标准值-
min)/(max-min)
我想问问 各位还有没有 更好的方法，可以把平均数，方差考虑在内的rank 呢

1,如果同一个program既有categorical又有advanced，而你又特别喜欢这个
program，可以在rank这个program的categorical第一，然后rank
advanced 第二，在选了advanced后，会出来sub-column,让你选pre-lim
programs。
2，每个advanced program有自己的pre-lim选项，可以重新排序。
3，在主column里可以单独rank pre-lim programs。但是，如果在主column
里先选了pre-lim program,将不会出现sub-column，没有机会再选advanced
program. 因此，最好是把pre-lim program排在主column的最后作为back up。

of them.
Today,I emailed one PD and one PC. Got replies"As long as you are listed in
ERAS as being a prelim and a cat, you can certainly rank us in both"

出来了。
也就是说，你能不能match上，一取决于医院Rank你的名次，二取决于和你面试相同医
院的别的面试者Rank的顺序。你自己Rank的顺序，对于你能不能Match上没有影响，但
对于你能match上哪家医院有影响；同时，也影响着别的申请者能不能Match上。我理解
的对吧？

通常大家普遍认为Ranking时先排完所有AMGs，再排IMGs；而且List也是从USMLE高分到
低分排。记得那年我去面试，曾对一位attending讲我会做得与AMG一样出色，结果她讲
“No, you are better！”但别人对我说，那位attending只是拣好听的讲而已，不能
当真。
在面试结束的resident ranking，结果却出乎我的预料。在这里，大家不关注USMLE成
绩，也不关注是不是AMG，最重要的一条就是喜不喜欢这个申请人。因此，在最想要的
top5中排入了IMGs，却把有些AMGs拉到了最后。其中有位AMG不论从USMLE成绩还是做病
理的credential都相当出色，但大家拒绝排他，原因是太arrogant。所以，关键问题成
了这个人是不是good team player，跟这个人共事四年是pleasant 还是suffering。
另外，做on site OB也是把双刃剑，如果做得好，大家都喜欢，自然锦上添花；如果做
得不好，把个性上的弱点暴露出来，反而成了ranking时的一大杀手。这并不看是否有

university-industry collaboration in Britain for HM Treasury, the finance

open for assistant/associate professor.
联想到最近我们学系的一次search,也是 open ranking. 结果来的三个candidates都
是已经是tenure 或是tenure track的. 当然,后来也很悲剧,这三人都没接offer,又换
了一批postdoctor或fresh phd来接着interview,现在还没出结果.
很好奇对open ranking的职位search committee是怎么选candidate的? 真的是谁强让
谁来吗? 那不都是来争associate的了吗 |

当然偶作为fresh全部阵亡。。。
只是通常open rank的话，系里通常会倾向于招senior的人。只是senior的人比较难招，
很可能发了几个offer都会被拒。整个时间会拖得很长，fresh的人等不起啊 |

我目前的情况是phd毕业7、8年了，开始是薄厚，然后是工业界的研究所。现在有个去
50-100名学校的可能。广告开的是assistant prof.，但是去年开会见过scc，scc说我
如果申请的话，rank上可能可以有wiggle room。所以我想问一下谈rank这种事情应该
是面试的时候跟系主任或者scc说呢，还是等offer来了再negotiate？
另外一个更重要的问题就是究竟要不要谈。问了几个在学术界的朋友，听说很多学校如
果给了associate prof. without tenure就要上fast track，三年就要评审。我自己的
情况是这几年在工业界文章发的还比较多，比系里同方向刚评上副教授的老师要多不少
。教学方面这几年偶尔会到附近的大学教几节课（guest lecturer），但是没有教过整
个学期。另外还做过一些postdoc的co-mentor。拉Funding方面经验基本就没有了，到
是有过审funding的经历。现在思路有些混乱，心里没底要不要试试associate+3年，或
