Russia had the 4 northern islands because they occupied it during WWII and
never gave it back. Not because Russia had a dispute with Japan about the
ownership of the islands and then sent in the military to take it.
If the south sea islands were to be officially recognized by a large group
of countries as not belonging to China, then it would be very, very
difficult for China to regain the ownership.
