Gasoline has exceeded or approached $5.00 per gallon in some parts of the
United States long before the normal peak travel season has begun. Already
the politicians, headline writers, and some cable and talk show pundits are
pointing to the usual suspects. But they have avoided or are unaware of
where the fault actually lies.
One of the foundational tenets of economics is what is known as the law of
supply and demand. Normally whenever a product or commodity is in short
supply...

Across the nation, as states struggle fiscally, Republican-led legislatures
are reining in spending to balance state budgets. What a refreshing sight
to behold: government actually spending less today than it did yesterday,
eliminating government programs, and reducing the number of public-sector
workers where necessary.
A complete contrast to the way in which government works at the federal
level, such measures are foreign to many Americans. We are conditioned to
the standard...

MISSOULA, Mont.—With a homemade .22-caliber rifle he calls the Montana
Buckaroo, Gary Marbut dreams of taking down the federal regulatory state.
Montana passed a law that tries to exempt the state from federal gun
regulation. But the law is now before the courts, in a test of states'
rights. WSJ's Jess Bravin reports.
He's not planning to fire his gun. Instead, he wants to sell it, free from
federal laws requiring him to record transactions, pay license fees and open
his business to government i...

By Peter Wilson
President Obama has suggested in his last 147 television appearances that he
inherited the national debt from President Bush, who squandered the Clinton
surplus with his "tax cuts for the rich" and his unnecessary wars.
Now someone at whitehouse.gov, apparently not an accountant or an economist,
has put together an "infographic" that assigns hard numbers to these vague
assertions, explaining in detail how "$12.7 Trillion [was] Added to the Debt
Over the Last Decade." The graphi... 阅读全帖

The battle over adding a balanced-budget amendment may have made headlines
in recent weeks, but the debate over the issue is nearly as old as the
United States, according to The Christian Science Monitor.
Thomas Jefferson proposed such an amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1798
to rein in spending of the nation’s second president, John Adams, and
prohibit the federal government from spending beyond its means.
“I wish it were possible to obtain a... 阅读全帖

Over at RedState.com, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell explains that his
state’s Republican gains in Tuesday’s elections have been well-earned by
showing how well conservative policies can rein in the cost of government
while continuing to fund infrastructure and education. It’s quite a good
read, and not a bad roadmap for other Republicans to consider:

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Google Inc has abandoned an ambitious
project to make renewable energy cheaper than coal, the latest target of
Chief Executive Larry Page's moves to focus the Internet giant on fewer
efforts.
Google said on Tuesday that it was pulling the plug on seven projects,
including Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal as well as a Wikipedia-like
online encyclopedia service known as Knol.

Germany’s dominance was won by national character, not arms or handouts.
The rise of a German Europe began in 1914, failed twice, and has now ended
in the victory of German power almost a century later. The Europe that
Kaiser Wilhelm lost in 1918, and that Adolf Hitler destroyed in 1945, has at
last been won by Chancellor Angela Merkel without firing a shot.
Or so it seems from European newspapers, which now refer bit...

The Middle-Class Agenda
Earlier this month, President Obama delivered his first unabashed 2012
campaign speech. Unlike his opponents, Mr. Obama acknowledged the ravages of
income equality, the hollowing out of the American middle class. There is
no hyperbole in the urgency he conveyed about “a make-or-break moment for
the middle class, and for all those who are fighting to get into the middle
class.”
The challenge for Mr. Obama is to translate the plight of the middle class
into an...
