1929年1月15号，乔治亚州亚特兰大市的奥本路（Auburn Ave），小马丁出生于一个黑
人民权牧师家庭。作为黑人孩子，他非常有幸能求学并在北方获得神学博士学位。1954
年，他与妻子Coretta Scott King移居阿拉巴马州蒙哥马利市，在Dexter Avenue
Baptist Church当牧师。
