长期失业的黛德瑞罗麦尼(Deirdre Romine)这个月7日行经俄州罗根郡(Logan County)法院前的喷水池，发现池内有一些有许愿习惯的民众丢入的各式硬币，她当时心想可利用这些没有主人的硬币，买食物给自己和家中一同挨饿的四只猫吃，便动手捡拾。
未料，一名警察随即上前盘查，在罗麦尼的口袋搜出2.87元的硬币后，当场把她逮捕。罗麦尼随后并控偷窃罪，一旦罪名成立，最高将面临入狱服刑六个月和罚款1000元。
社区人士泽尔(Will Zell)因同情罗麦尼的遭遇，主动在网路上发起捐款活动，协助她打官司。据悉，目前捐款已超过1万4000元。
泽尔表示：“我们要让社区居民知道该案的来龙去脉，而非仅有罗麦尼遭逮捕的新闻。我们也希望借由捐款对她提供协助。”
警方表示，罗麦尼在警察盘查和搜出硬币后，并未据实以报，才会被控罪。
