You don't know the story. The couple's children were severely disabled,
unable to eat or talk or walk. Their health insurance had reached its limits
and they had spent down their savings and were about to start in on their
retirement funds. Theirs was a grim situation. Very little compassion in
America. |

Sam Roweis，原来UofT副教授，刚刚转到New York University，结果上个月居然从公
寓16楼跳下来去世了。37岁。

此人的简历，
中学University of Toronto Schools，有孩的都知道这是个很好的私立学校（当然也
很贵）。
大学本科University of Toronto Engineering Science，这是UofT的天才班。
博士Caltech，跟的导师是牛人John Hopfield
中间导师去了Princeton，所以又在Princeton待过。不过博士还是算Caltech的。
博士毕业又在University Colloge London，MIT做过博后。如果人工智能的方向，要作
Faculty的都要作博后的。
2001起在UofT作Faculty。2006拿到副教授。我记得2003年他就在公布的年薪over 100k
的名单上了。

capped by three or five millions or more for one's life time. Read your own
policy, you will find similar terms.

不是他老婆陪他去看病呢。。。我想很多人都有这丝看法，不过很快淹没在谴责浙大的
声音中了。
前段时间碰到一位浙大学院的老师（和涂博士一个研究所），他说当时涂博士老婆已在
北京某学校（她的母校）上班了。不知道他说的是否事实，但还是唏嘘不已。。。

算有点了解.可以稍微八卦一下.
矮子里面拔长子,加拿大科研最牛的学校自然是Univ. of Toronto,这个学校相当于中
国的北大+北大,集人气资金于一身.可以是"大而全而精".整体的学术声誉能达到美国
top 20左右,一些专业(比如化学,据cds)能挤进top 10.在加拿大读博士的人里,
Waterloo的人看Toronto,用"景仰"两个字来形容亦表之不足.以CS为例,几乎每个field
都有牛人压阵,傲视加拿大其他芸芸众生.从其CS Faculty来说,可以说除了美国牛校毕
业的,就是本校毕业后在牛地方做PosDoc再过来的.选材之严,全加无出其右.特别赞的
是其Machine Learning Group,从大牛Hinton到新秀Roweis(Caltech Hopfield的第子),
可以说是世界级的.理论和算法有图灵奖得主Cook,Borodin,Rackoff,不过Cook最近好
象不太活跃.数据库也不错,有Mendelzon, Miller,也一直很active.如果来加拿大, |
