I Am Not Charlie Hebdo
David Brooks
The journalists at Charlie Hebdo are now rightly being celebrated as martyrs
on behalf of freedom of expression, but let’s face it: If they had tried
to publish their satirical newspaper on any American university campus over
the last two decades it wouldn’t have lasted 30 seconds. Student and
faculty groups would have accused them of hate speech. The administration
would have cut financing and sh... 阅读全帖

#CNNBlackmail: Outrage after network appears to threaten Reddit user
CNN was facing almost universal backlash on Wednesday after running an
article on the Reddit user who made an anti-CNN, wrestling-themed GIF
tweeted by President Trump over the weekend – and seeming to imply the
network would reveal the person’s identity if he reneged on an apology.
Andrew Kaczynski, the senior editor and founding member of the cable network

China’s media is no stranger to getting duped by American political satire.
One of the best known incidents of this took place last November when
America’s “finest news source”, the Onion, a satirical newspaper and
website, named North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un as its sexiest man of 2012.
Soon after, Communist Party publication People’s Daily ran a report on the
Onion story, replete with the whacky descriptions of Kim’s “air of powe... 阅读全帖

来自主题: USANews版 - On July 4, remember: We are not French
By: Ann Coulter
7/4/2012 01:01 PM
It has become fashionable to equate the French and American revolutions, but
they share absolutely nothing beyond the word “revolution.” The American
Revolution was a movement based on ideas, painstakingly argued by serious
men in the process of creating what would become the freest, most prosperous
nation in world history.
The French Revolution was a revolt of the mob. It was the primogenitor of
the horrors of the Bolshevik revolution, Hitler’s Nazi Party, M... 阅读全帖

By Victor Davis Hanson
Sometimes societies find themselves in pernicious cycles in which the
perceived medicine seems worse than the known disease. The Roman satirist
Juvenal lamented the ill effects of free food and free entertainment for the
masses (“bread and circuses”) in part because he knew there was no remedy
for the pathology in sight — and thus only a slow decline toward fiscal
insolvency or riots were on the horizon. Any Roman emperor bold enough to
rein in the Praetorian Guard, charge... 阅读全帖

Charlie Hebdo Attack, Another Reason to Protect Unpopular Speech
January 8, 2015 - 12:19 PM
By Richard Kelsey
A terror attack on a satirical French newspaper that caricatured Mohammed
has killed 11 people in Paris.
The terror attack in France against the satirist magazine Charlie Hedbo is a
stark reminder that free speech is neither free nor safe in many parts of
the world. While it may be true that the pen is mightier than the sword in
the war for hearts and minds, on the actual battlefield ag... 阅读全帖

Playboy: With the American publication of Lolita in 1958, your fame and
fortune mushroomed almost overnight from high repute among the literary
cognoscenti—which you had enjoyed for more than 30 years—to both acclaim
and abuse as the world-renowned author of a sensational best seller. In the
aftermath of this cause célèbre, do you ever regret having written Lolita?... 阅读全帖

The science and technology of jokes:
Paraprosdokian
A paraprosdokian (from Greek "παρα-", meaning "beyond" and "προσδ
οκία", meaning "expectation") is a figure of speech in which the
latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected in a way
that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part.
It is frequently used for humorous or dramatic effect, sometimes producing
an anticlimax. For this reason, it is extremely popular among comedians and
satirists.
