我碰到的科研人员---尤其是美国人,其实比中国人更在乎SCIENCE/ENGINEERING的区别
有些东西明明是ENG他们还要往SC上拽
TOWNES回忆录里记录了MASER发明的艰难过程. 由于TOWNES本人不是分子束的专家,制作
分子束的MASER实在有点门槛.于是哥大的巨人们从系主任到NB奖得主都对TOWNES的
MASER责难有加.其中对TOWNES本人的当面指责也就罢了--TOWNES毕竟是拿了终生教授职
位的。
还要对他的学生Zeiger说出这样难听的话---“你的两年青春真是浪费在这轻浮的没有
科学的项目上了!”
原来哥大的RABBI,KUSCH都认为MASER/LASER是没有科学意义的东西,在一些正统科学家
看来—发明不是科学,发现才是科学.发明是被科学家用的。因此MASER和LASER是没有科
学意义的东西.这也导致他们, 甚至TOWNES本人对LASER没有对光谱的发现更有兴趣 ---
TOWNES做MASER也是为了得到更高分辨率的光谱.

一个蛋白， double KD之后发现能复活，就science了。要是找工作，有个science多了
不起，mol cell的paper用更复杂的方法证明了一个机理，science的paper多考虑了一
个蛋白. |

immunology
，immunity差了一截……
Science也就主刊还可以，子刊有一个算一个明显不如nature对应的子刊。science子刊
每一期的文章数量都很少，所以影响因子应该比较容易弄上去，但是还是比不过nature
子刊，这就很说明问题了。
还是那句话，假设如果你自己手上有paper可以保证发nature medicine或者science
translational medicine, 又有谁会选择后者呢？至少目前这种人很少…… |

科学系里,看介绍,是做 math modeling,用计算机也多,请问它和computer science有何
区别呢?我在中国不是学math or 计算机的,本科而是药学专业毕业的,但在此US大学学
了一年的math and Statistics,学习也很好.还做TAfor Calculus and statistics,如
我学习这个PhD in Computational Science,会有前途吗?在USA将来会做什么工作?如回
中国又会找到什么工作?是可以做faculty吗?还是得去industry找工作呢?年纪巳偏大,

多转几个版。这个是非商业的科研机构，我也没好处可捞，不算违规吧？
有一个Petabyte-scale的云计算资源，可以用来储存数据以及进行科学计算，
有点类似AWS，现在有许多NIH以及NASA等也在使用。这个资源现在对非营利
科研用途是免费的, 上面还有一些pipeline，比如基因组分析一类的。不管
是有大的project或者自己用来玩玩都可以，3/12号有一个demo的seminar
教如何注册和使用。有兴趣的可以快去报名注册。

独立学科都有他存在的理由。营养学是以biology，chemistry等为基础的，但是我们有自
己的研究方向和方法，和biology，chemistry还是差远了去了。其实学生物的都知道，光
是生命科学，下面林林总总的学科就太多了，搞遗传的和搞生态的基本上八竿子够不着，

我的感觉是传统统计比是有数理基础，我见过理论统计学家连计算机都没碰过的。从这
一点上靠近经济学模型多一些。
data science似乎更多的基于cs和engineering的一些过程，用optimization的多一些。
虽说两种都需要business sense,但是传统统计模型需要一些比较明确的假设，也就是
data model需要的东西，一般情况结果会支持或者反对最初的假设，通常需要建立
causal relationship. 但是data science 的模型可以没有这些东西，结果是主要的。
以我做的predictive model来说，我的模型中变量选入需要有临床依据，结果出来需要
和临床知识做个对比。但是data scientist做的东西只需要解释input和output,不用解
释how and why,有点black box的感觉。
我的理解是有些问题上明显是传统统计的应用靠铺一些，比如诸类社会科学研究和商业
界基于知识背景的研究。但是某些模型，金融中的一部分问题，自然科学类，比如预测

12月20日，Science杂志发表了我校理学院副教授张葳葳在高压物理领域的最新研
究成果“Unexpected stable stoichiometries of sodium chlorides（钠氯间反常计
量比化合物）”。这是我校物理系教师首次以第一完成人身份在该杂志发表高水平论文
。文章打破基础化学传统的八电子规则，开创科学研究新领域。
该文由我校理学院物理系张葳葳副教授和美国纽约州立大学石溪分校地学系材料设
计中心, 先进计算科学研究所Artem R. Oganov 教授，美国华盛顿-卡内基研究院
Alexander F. Goncharov教授等，以及其他欧美国外科研机构科研人员合作完成。
文章打破了基础化学的基本规律之一——八电子规则，革命性地开创了科学研究的
新领域。文章通过理论预测，并实验验证了在Na-Cl体系中，违背八电子规则的反常化
合物的稳定存在。
