name is Sharbat Gula, an ordinary name for an ordinary Afghan girl
who, quite accidentally, found herself a global icon in the mid-1980s.
She was 12 years old, an orphan living in the Nasir Bagh refugee camp
in Peshawar, Pakistan, when Steve McCurry, a photographer for the

Gula finally came to light in 2002, when a team sent by the National
Geographic found her in the remote region of Afghanistan that she
had returned to after the end of the Soviet invasion. This is a
photograph taken of her at that time, and her full story is documented at
