T********d 发帖数: 621 | 2 Seriously, I prepared myself for this trip, physically and mentally. Well,
at least, that’s what I thought.
Carrying 35 pounds and made to Haystack in 1 hour 48 minutes was not a joke.
I told myself that I, am, going to, make, to the end of Sulphide glacier.
The rock climbing at the very end, I can let it go this time. But, I will
certainly try my very best. Why? Because even thought I am not in any way to
impress ZD, I am not in any way want to disappoint/annoy him, so that I

T********d 发帖数: 621 | 3 How it Began
It began as an email traffic initiated by ZD. Hubby expressed our interests.
Response was ZD's concern:
"The only concern I have is her fitness. This is usually a 2-day climb but
we are doing it in one day. We will have to move at a moderate pace but will
only break every 1.5 to 2 hours. I think she is likely OK, especially if
she carries a very light pack. So she can definitely go with us, but if she
cannot keep the pace I like, she will have to stay at the high camp (just

T********d 发帖数: 621 | 4 The Trip
Trip started on August 7, 3PM. I left work and drove our Civic, which has
our backpacks prepared the previous night, to pick up hubby. We were 25
minutes earlier. "Well, it's better than late." I said.
At 4PM, ZD arrived, then XW. She is so delightful, like always. (xixi, this
is acturally my 2nd face-to-face encounter with her.)
First stop: Costco - Kirkland
I bought 3 chicken bakes after strong recommendation by both ZD and XW. The
sugar coated churro was quite good, thanks to XW.

T********d 发帖数: 621 | 5 Getting up at 2:15AM, and starting at 3PM was not unheard of to me. But
certainly it's first time I was actually among the ones who were doing it.
Despite my empty stomach, I did my best to force down 1 bite of chicken bake
.
It was so dark. For a moment, I felt that I was a mountaineer, while hiking
in the woods with help of head lights. But that moment was gone so quickly,
as I saw the distance between XW and me was becoming bigger and bigger, and
my breath becoming more and more strenuous.

We found the trail, and re-filled water supplier. Then they roped up
proceeded to summit. "You wait here, night or day, till we back." ZD said to
me.
Yes, I did not go to the end of Sulphide glacier. Yes, I had to choose stay
behind, not because I was forced to. I knew, it's either me sacrificing my
chance to my own promise, or they 3 had to sacrifice their chance to summit
in a day. I wish that I could be better shape, and I wish that I could be

T********d 发帖数: 621 | 7 Yet another Decision to Make
Cabbage left at around 4:30 - 5PM. He told me that I should go to the high
camp, which is 400 feet higher, if I don't see my group by dark. He would
come back check on me if by dark he doesn't see my group. I appreciated his
suggestion, and anchored myself back.
That 12 person's group also brought more mosquitoes. But this became my
least concern when I saw that cloud approaching quickly, and some of the low
hills were already in whiteout.

T********d 发帖数: 621 | 8 Regroup
About 1 hour after I reached high camp, I met up with my group. XW was
injured, but not very serious.
We regrouped and started descending at 8PM, back at trail head at 10:30PM.
Trivia:
1. ZD's waist line was so appealing, that the 2 ladies in the group were
very jealous.
2. That 3 hours non-trail route, in a way, it shaped me. (Or at least, that'
s what I am hoping.) Or should I say, it re-shaped me? Even though, I
believe that ZD would have preferred the real trail to save precise time. |

How many days the climb would be ?
what are the requirements for the participants ?

Qualification I assume at least "Basic Climb Class Graduate", as Sammyboy

Requirement:
1. Excellent physical conditioning. If you are tired after climbing Hood S

2. Able to move up and down quickly on class 4 terrains unroped and low
5th class terrain with running belay. Chimney itself is class 4 and is about

that should have the skills of a Basic Student Graduate. Anyway, it's zd's
climb. The leader make the decision. I totally trust his leadership. It
would be a nice climb, not mentioning the good view on the summit. |

关于怎样下山:是否穿冰爪,face in还是face out down climb。
之前,只能face in down climb. |

Neutral Density filter

“This is definitely the most strenuous climb I have ever done. It beats the
one-day climb of Rainier. We spent exactly 10 hours in "you-fall-you-die"
zone. I think this is the toughest part of the climb. Of course, if we didn'
t make any navigational mistakes, that time would be cut to 6 hours, which
is much more managable.” |
