法口诀。事实上任何一种文明语言都有乘法口诀，只不过不见得有中文九九表这么简洁
。本文要探讨的就是这个简洁在算术上的优势。
中国的高中生在国际数学奥林匹克上拿冠军已经不是什么新鲜事了。事实上，不拿冠军
才是新鲜事。有人认为这是强化训练的结果，不能真正代表平均水平。小学生的国际竞
赛不多，一般的小学生（不是选出来的那些）应该没有什么强化训练，他们之间的比较
应该有一定的代表性。英国教育考察团看到的差距应该是真实的差距。
或许有人要说，中国的家长在小孩没有上小学以前就普遍开始强化训练自己的小孩，所

背景：女孩，4岁10个月，基本讲英文，放羊娃。
她问我：mommy,what is 8+8?
我数给她听：你看,8个手指头这里，你的8个手指头这里，我one，two，three，-----
sixteen。知道了吧？
她茫然了，还是数不到12以后。
我引导她：你看，10就是ten，那16就是six+ten，所以叫sixteen。
她说：it makes no sense!if you are right, then it should be 61, not 16。
我当即凌乱了，说：我们换中文，中文叫十六，所以是16。

，所以老师吭哧吭哧的教数数。
以前我也不理解数学有啥难的，我给儿子班上volunteer一年级数学，我就不懂为啥他
们就是不懂。老师要花大半个学年教20以内的加减法，一道题我讲了3遍，4个孩子里总
有一个还不明白。
你家中文也能数对吧。后来我想了一下，这里有一个时机的问题。孩子还没有理解位数
和发音的规律之前，就让他们记住，就是像你这么说的直接背下来，再明白sixteen 和
sixteen之间的区别，是比一边让他们学习进位一边学习sixty要容易得多。而且，中英
文有很强烈的互补，16中文叫十六，60叫六十，中文的叫法里已经把逢十进位这个关系
讲的很清楚了。 |

有报导说，英国教育考查团来中国时对中国的九九乘法口诀印象深刻。据说中国的小孩
比英国同龄小孩算术能力强很多。
一个自然的问题是，九九乘法口诀有什么神奇的地方？难道英国没有吗？英国当然有乘
法口诀。事实上任何一种文明语言都有乘法口诀，只不过不见得有中文九九表这么简洁
。本文要探讨的就是这个简洁在算术上的优势。
中国的高中生在国际数学奥林匹克上拿冠军已经不是什么新鲜事了。事实上，不拿冠军
才是新鲜事。有人认为这是强化训练的结果，不能真正代表平均水平。小学生的国际竞
赛不多，一般的小学生（不是选出来的那些）应该没有什么强化训练，他们之间的比较
应该有一定的代表性。英国教育考察团看到的差距应该是真实的差距。
或许有人要说，中国的家长在小孩没有上小学以前就普遍开始强化训练自己的小孩，所
以仍然没有可比性。那么我们再来看一般大众。根据我过去近30年的体验，美国大众的
算术能力是很难恭维的。毫不夸张地说，如果没有收银机，商店里面许多收银员不能地
准确找出零钱。反过来看中国的菜农，几乎从来不用计算器或纸笔。卖任何肉，菜或水

computer, reading等等，大概20分钟后一起circle time，讲什么不知道，大概就是主
题教育，上午有一堂math，45分钟，是要分班的，每天还有一堂其他老师的课，PE/
music/art/computer/media(包括video,library)，也是45分钟，不一定在上午有时是
中午。中午吃饭之后有recess。中间换教室换老师什么的磨蹭磨蹭，小朋友轮着去个卫
生间，弄破了手老师给包扎一下，反正就是这些杂事混合一下，也差不多了，下午将近
3点放学。
我有点被吓到了，昨天小朋友回来说，two times eight is sixteen, four times
four is sixteen too! zero times anything is zero。拿回来的作业，上学期开始就
有学到50，昨天拿回来的作业学到数字90，眼瞅就要突破两位数了么，学了怎么
measure，甚至还知道half写做.5
这是怎样一个aggressive的老师啊！！

first have circle time, then read some stories, then group work (like making
a book about a letter), then recess, at last circle time again (may read a
