I submitted two proposals to one (the same) NSF program (due in the early
August in 2010). One was rated "low competitive" and declined in 2010 Dec,
the other one in the same NSF solicitation is still "pending" although its
status date has been kept changing, >=3 times after the Panel meeting date..
I don't know what it means, probably it at least means given the NSF FY2011
budge is uncertain, POs' decision-making process is not easy now.

to start working but the person must get the degree within the first
semester of work. during this time period, the rank is lower (lecturer) and
i believe the salary is lower too. |

lawyer to contact the grievance officer in school. once the dean/provost
talks to your department chair, he is going to hate you but he has nothing
he can do. he is dead meat.

1)T&P is (much) more about papers and grants. Think of them as thresholds or
necessary and non-sufficient conditions. After that, you should be a good
colleague (and a potential friend), cause' I will see your every day after T
&P.
2)Definitely solicit comments from chair/senior colleagues. They have a
strong say in lots of things.
3)Just relax. Make sure you have done everything you can, and maintain a

我们平常见的这种non-solicited, self-initiated 的R01 grant， 的确是没有啥原因
就不能乱要钱的，连做老鼠的人，一般也就是乖乖的要个modular。除非要做人或者做
猴子的，才敢小心翼翼的多要一点。不过，我以前好像听说过一个说法是我们这种self
-initiated 的R01 grant其实不是NIH支出的大头。所以可能他说“大部分grant 不用
modular budget”可能是指那些其他grant吧？但是在我的印象中那些“其他grant”一
般都有比较浓厚的政治意味，不是我们一般人够得着的。

。项目的年限一般是三年或四年，也是写清楚的。PI的限制，不同的program有不同的

faculty一起写一个NSF的proposal。在第一次开会大家讨论写什么怎么分工之前，这位
senior说他会做为PI我们其他junior会做为co-PIs，同时我们还会跟另外一个学校合作
。在大家开会讨论修改了若干次之后，我们的pre-proposal按时提交了（补充一下，这
个program需要先提交pre-proposal，然后会被邀请提交full-proposal）。可是提交之
后，我们几个同事都没有在fastlane上面看到提交的信息。有一位同事问了他，他说提
交只能放四个人在上面，不是每个人的名字都在。而且我们是跟其他学校合作，提交的
时候是我们学校两个人，合作学校两个人。目前距离提交已经有2-3周时间了，他一直
也没有跟我们每一个人解释说明原因，关于为什么我们不在pre-proposal上。我也查过
program solicitation，但是上面并没有说只能有四个PIs and coPIs在上面。

关于这个equipment有什么说法吗？小grant都不能碰?
我是要做检测疾病的仪器研发，基本上是有个想法，还没设备，思路是先用些高端部件
验证可行性，后续研究用低成本部件+自动化。要是啥都不能买，就很
头疼了。样品有合作者提供，需要的不是很多，还比较容易采集。
R15 solicitation 里没有postdoc的说明，我就当可以招了。300K 勉强 cover 3 年
personnel ，缩到2年就能腾出设备的钱。 |
