From the bidding, it seems that West holds 4 hearts + 6 Diamonds.
He had showed 2 spades already, what will be the missing card,
spade or club?
If he has only two spades, it doesn't really matter if he covered
the second spade or not. Obviously, he wants North to continue and
puts pressure on south whose decision would be critical.

it's reasonable to play your RHO for 4 spades.
so after you finished drawing your trumps, RHO couldn't afford to
discard any spades. he has to discard some of his diamonds and clubs.
if you can read the situation well, I think he would discard his "useless"
diamond, you can cash your diamond first, the 3rd diamond might really
squeeze your RHO, he can't afford to pitch one spade, so he'd

the suit length and the quality. Double doesn't guarantee 4 spades, so 1S
can be bid with 10 HCPs and a bad 4 card spade suit (for example: Jxxx Kxx

if you hold 5+ spades). Here, partner denies a good hand, because with a

least 2 spades on diamond, so spade shift wouldn't lose anything, and it
gains when partner has SAQ.
The main thing is that partner should know you only have 2 spades, he wouldn
't discourage diamonds unless he holds SAQ, or some holding that wouldn't
cost if you play a spade.
Simply put, if partner has some other holding, such as Axxx in spades, he
should encourage in diamonds. AJxx is not so clear, but percentage-wise

should cue one with control (may be 2nd round control). But I saw some top
players cue the one without control, and I have no idea why they do it that
way.
RHO's 4NT may suggest control in spade, but maybe he has 3 or 4 spades, so
he can deduce his pd holds singleton or void spade.
So there is no clear answer based on above nonsense analysis.

are irrelevant: if you can take 4 clubs, you don't need spades split; if you
have to lose 2 clubs, then spades 3-3 doesn't help.
But on some other hands you may need to establish spade tricks. For example:
xx Qxx Kxx Kxxxx, 6NT has almost no chance, while 6C may roll home even if
spade splits 4-2. |

have 11 top tricks. As I said, this is not a great slam, although hardly
the worst I've seen.
I think S9 makes spade suit more attractive for developing the additional
trick. Options are:
1) Finesse SJ, if lost then later finesse S9. 75% chance.
2) Finesse SJ, if lost then later play AK for drop. In addition to LHO
holding SQ, it also works if S are 3-3, or ten-doubleton. Somewhere around
77%.

First, test diamonds. If 3-3 or DJ drop then claim. If DJ is outstanding in
LHO, claim (there are multiple ways to ensure 13 tricks).
If DJ is outstanding in RHO, next you play two more clubs (dummy pitch 1
heart, then D10).
1) If RHO has only 6 minor cards, you next cash 2 hearts, if LHO can follow
then RHO has at least 2 spades, you can pick up spade suit with confidence;
if LHO shows out then you know exact spade distribution too.

I'd bid 3D with north's hand.
for 4S, west holds at least 5 spades, perhaps 6. if he holds 6 spades,
you'll have a hard time, because he may switch a trump and you'll
have little play unless he has 6-3-2-2 shape.
If west has 5 spades, you have better chance to make it.
A killing defence might be a diamond return after two clubs which might
have killed your entry. Then you have to play long spades with stiff diamond. |

stand spade switch, I should encourage in diamonds. Partner can see dummy,
and can figure out that I would not really want him to shift to a diamond.
The diamond encouragement basically means: don't shift to spades.
When I discourage in D, from partner's perspective, declarer can hold DQx,
diamonds will be running to provide some discards in spades. So shifting to

as long as spade is no worst than 5-3, or the one with the 2 or less spades
also has only one heart, or the hearts broke 2-2 anyway.
i plan to play this hand extremely fast, in order to put some time pressure
on the opponent. maybe they will misdefend it by forgetting to ruff the
spade. |

low. Against average defenders it might be best to cash clubs then exit with
a spade, if you believe it is 5-3 split. When LHO cashes last spade, RHO

But with strong defenders, this probably won't work. LHO can win the spade
exit and switch to a diamond immediately. |

If both follow on DQ, we concede a spade immediately. Then use 2nd trump to
dummy to ruff 2nd spade to set up the suit, and 3rd trump to enjoy the 4

BTW, although 6D looks good, I don't like either 5D or 6D bid. |

持有 club Ace. 如东club Ace 进手后,
则 1 Spades, 4 hearts, 2 Dias, 2 Clubs.
如东hold up aces, 庄家k 上手打 spade Q,
则 2 spades, 4 hearts, 2 Dias, 1 Clubs.

1. Spades 4-4 and Queen is on side(West), you can ruff finesse to make it.
2. Or play Queen third and drop by ruffing 2 little spades.
If West had been led away from Queen, you can see whether anyone plays the
deuce in the following round. And from their convention, you probably will
have a clue whether West led away from 4 spades, or 3 maybe 5.
Without any clue, I guess Queen drop is more likely then 4-4 and Queen onside. |
