现代高能物理始於1940年代的量子场论（Quantum Field Theory），最初的应用是以
量子电动力学（Quantum Electro-Dynamics，QED）来解释电磁力。
在1950年代，加速器的技术突飞猛进，数以百计的高能粒子被发现；物理学家在整理
这些粒子的时候，注意到各种对称性（Symmetry），其中最深奥困难也最重要的是规范
对称性（Gauge Symmetry）。其实QED本身就是一个规范场论，但是它只是规范场论中
最简单的一种，叫可交换规范场论（Abelian Gauge Theory）。
1954年，杨振宁和他的学生Robert Mills解决了非交换规范场论（Non-Abelian

上周末，耶鲁校长发了个全校通告：Calhoun住宿学院正式改名。一下子把我看乐了。
Calhoun出身南卡，是耶鲁1804届毕业生，当过美国副总统、国务卿、战争部长等；
1931年被用来命名耶鲁新建的七个住宿学院之一。而Calhoun近年背运连连，是因为他
生前大力支持黑奴制，坚决反对废奴运动。前年，Calhoun的南卡家乡爆出黑人教堂枪
杀案，成为这个倒霉蛋的最后一根稻草：愤怒的耶鲁学生游行抗议、联名写信，要求学
校废除Calhoun这个学院名。
