里写作文,谁要是在篇首或篇尾引用“谚语”或“名人名言“,那是要被老师打红色双
圈加分的。英文世界里学生作文这样写就不行,怕是要被批评为太依赖cliche。有趣的
是,英文文章开篇或结尾引用名人名言的重灾区是在写关于中国的文章里,很流行开头
或结尾引用一句孔子孟子之类的。
中国的谚语那么多,正着反着都有谚语给你引用,到最后充其量就是谚语对谚语,真正
的讨论看不见,思维水平和能力也没有提高,而是纯看谁掌握的谚语更多更晦涩。在这
个文化环境下熏陶出来的中国人,一看别人引用谚语了,就给予undeserved respect,
觉得谚语背得熟的人高,谚语的最初作者那更高,古人就是有智慧。这种文化能有思辨
能力,能创新吗?
1984里引入一个概念叫thought-terminating cliche,说的就是这个现象。Robert Jay
