诸如「沈阳」「张家口」「大连」等地名甚至都不是汉语，而是根据这三个城市分别在
满语、蒙古语和日语中名称的发音，写作Mukden，Kalgan，和Dairen。
很多人都有这样的疑问，为什么北京大学的英文名字不是Beijing University，却叫
Peking University？为什么青岛啤酒也不写成Qingdao Beer而偏偏是Tsingtao Beer？
而为什么有时候四川省的外文不写作Sichuan而是写成Szechuan？
除了Peking，Tsingtao和Szechuan这样较为常见的「非常规」拼法，我们偶尔还能看到
像Tientsin（天津）Soochow（苏州）等在今天中国人眼中看来很「奇怪」的英文拼写
。此外，这些英文拼写的出现似乎也有一个规律：他们都是地名。
实际上，这样的外文拼写叫做「邮政式拼音」（Postal Romanization），是一套曾经
专门用来拼写中文地名的汉字拉丁化体系。
