正常，这只是一个过渡性的position，原来的assistant professor的暂时延续
如果之后Vanderbilt还准备聘他，给学生上课或带新的phd，就应该给相应的adjunct
professor了
而且我看不出来他之前在vanderbilt的position是part-time的
如果是full time但non-tenure track那应该给research professor或visiting
professor，没有给adjunct professor的
adjunct professor我知道的都是在其他单位有正式工作但在另一个单位兼职上上课或
兼带学生的，是part-time的，和你给出的定义一致
full time adjunct professor没见过。。。
他一个adjunct professor才对。给他一个adjunct assistant professor太低了。这只
是其中一个理由。

作者1974年生人，来美国14年，所以应该是1997年，23岁左右来的美国，23岁不可能在
国内已经完成了博士学习，所以作者应该是23岁来美国读的PhD,这样20多个人里面排除
掉国内博士学历的，也就剩了10多个， 从Publication的年代来看， 97年一来就发文
章，或者更早的有国外单位署名的文章的，也可以排除掉，结果这样下来符合条件的，
还就剩了两个人了。
再加上03年的Camry,我大致知道是谁了。因为我有个要好的朋友也在Vanderbilt不过不
是你们MC的，向她证实了一下，果然是开的03年的Camry. |

早上开车出去的时候，和往常一样有一搭没一搭的听着NPR。突然，一个名字引起了我
的注意，新闻里说New Hampshire的一家拍卖行正在拍卖一个Al Capone的签名，电话访
谈的专家估计最后的拍卖价格可能达到１万到１万５千美金。
Al "Scarface" Capone，禁酒时期芝加哥乃至全美国最著名（也有评价说是美国历史上
，当然一般说最臭名昭著）的黑帮头目，在他死去60多年以后，还能时不时的回到我们
的新闻中来。
你不知道他没关系，打开google，输入"Al "，出来的第一个就是＂Al Capone＂，下来
是大家熟悉的＂Al Pacino＂，我还没见到咱们戈尔副总统排到前头来过。:)
第一次接触到这个名字是在大学时代，周末在学校录像厅里流览的无数片子中有一部是
87年重拍的"The Untouchables"，讲的是当年美国禁酒局的特工（好象大家都把agent
翻成特工是吧？）如何与芝加哥黑帮斗智斗勇，最后大获全盛的故事。当年还年轻英俊
潇洒的Kevin Costner扮演男一号，禁酒局专员Eliot Ness，成熟魅力逼人的Robert de

我参观了不少1870-1930年大美国最上流社会的那圈人的故居，回来一读历史，就知道
这种女生换张白皮，就是美国上等人啊。
你想，vanderbilt算有钱吧。他去世的时候身价是美国GDP的1/87.就是1亿美元。然后
这1亿美元假定每年有300万的annuity。假定他有5个小孩分，每人是60万。然后每个小
孩有3个小小孩。到孙子这代就是20万一年。孙子再有2个小孩，到跟yatou22/mo年纪相
当的，就10万/年。这个价位那两女人，不是女生，不靠爸妈自己都给的起的。
那还是vanderbilt的后代。我跟你说哈，我一对比，就知道分量了。像这种好女生，那

一个，都是Edision市J P Stevens High school的。 上次消息刚爆出来的时候，大家
还说烙印networking发作。。。。
Jason Gan (Vanderbilt ), Andy Shi（Harvard）， Jasmine Yan（ Harvard），
Elmer Tan （Harvard），Katherine Ye （Princeton），和John Su,（Princeton）。
这个Vanderbilt从新泽西申请，应该比较容易吧。
还有看这里的数据，这高中亚裔占了三分二，白人四分一， 老黑老墨一成五，
各年纪间种族比例基本稳定，看来，这地方亚裔就这么占着了。 这亚裔里面，

我的高中也是13所作文通讯学校之一。我的文章入围过一次，但没上作文通讯，尽管我
觉得我的比那篇好。我是作文通讯的老读者了，从初中就开始看，而且模仿，连续六年

这里环境虽然好，但是离学校太远（大概有20mile路程），每天跑来跑去太麻烦。
另外现在住的条件对于两个天天在实验室干活只是回家吃饭睡觉的人来说也有点太奢侈
了。
室友和我商量了下，觉得还是另外找个离学校近点的地方比较好些。
看了版上一些以前的帖子，发现很多人在vanderbilt附近，而tsu那边不太安全（我老
板也这么说，所以就给我们推荐到antioch这边来了，但住了一个月感觉这边更适合拖
家带口的人来住）。所以现在想在vanderbilt附件找新住处，studio，1b1b，2b1b或者
2b2b都可以，如果能找到中国人多的小区就更好了。
请大家帮我们推荐下，如果能提供更具体的信息就好了（比如现在的房租价格，附近购

。话说罗德岛在地理上是美国最小的一个州，但是第一个宣布从英国独立的州，也是最
后一个接受美国宪法的州。 New port 在罗德岛的西南角，被誉为美国东部第一度假胜
地。这座人口不到三万的城市，但每年来此观光的游客不下百万。许多游客都是冲着来
看New port的豪宅，这座海滨城市在19世纪末涌入美国富有家族及企业家，在此建造奢
华的夏日度假豪宅。十几座富丽堂皇的大别墅傍海临风，其建筑规模和风格都相当讲究
，显示着19世纪末和20世纪初“豪宅”主人们耀眼财富和建筑师们创造的天才。另外值
得一提的是New port的夏日美景，美丽的海滩配合碧蓝的天空以及白色的帆船，真的是
风景如画。
The Breakers 听涛山庄，铁路大王Cornelius Vanderbilt 二世于1893 年所建造，New
port第一豪宅。
Marble House 大理石屋，Vanderbilt家族建于1888年，內部大量大理石的装饰，富丽
堂皇。

第一个私人拥有洛克菲勒中心这块地皮的是David Hosack。他是哥伦比亚医学院前身(
College and Surgeons)的教授，又是位结交广泛的绅士，从汉密尔顿(Alexander
Hamilton)到州政府都有不少朋友，而且他找了个有钱的老婆。在1801年用差一点不到
五千美元从纽约市买了洛克菲勒中心附近大约20公顷还是荒山野岭的土地，用于自己郊
外花园的业余爱好，弄了个规模不小的植物园。近乎十年不菲的开支最后把富老婆的钱
也花差不多了，可找不到土地买主，就靠他在州里的关系，七万五($75,000)强卖给了
政府。
1814年，哥伦比亚学院(Columbia College，大学前身)还在下城的Park Place(现在市
政公园西边一点)，看到其它兄弟大学都到州政府要到了经费，作为纽约州的最早学院
，哥伦比亚放下身段也去州里要钱，但州政府说已没多少经费，就把那没人要的20公顷
野地给了哥伦比亚，这当然认为是被人家打发了，可后来，在100年之后的后来，这块
地却成了哥伦比亚的金库。

庄严寺是全美佛教最负盛名的寺庙，常年游人如织。秋深庭色好，古寺、黄叶、疏影更
是摄影和hiking的大好去处。

然后日暮十分造访铁路打望故居、有国家历史遗迹的Vanderbilt山庄，这是全美最大的
