The structure of a sentence can be decomposed into

Modifier: adjective adverb adjective
A sentence cannot live without its verb. Always remember verbs with its
prepositions. Many verbs form useful phrases with appropriate prepositions.

No, "calm down" is the whole phrasal verb; "down" doesn't mean
"to a lesser degree". If "down" were to mean "to a lesser degree",
you would be able to omit "down" if you didn't want to express
the meaning "to a lesser degree". But you can't omit "down".
The same in both sentences.

Well, if you think the other way. How knife does cut is different from
how scissor does cut. And that's why you want to define an interface
with cut verb and have knife and scissor maintain the details individually.
A person without any knowledge of knife and scissor then can press

because 'except that' is followed by a past tense verb and
if not by a past perfect tense verb.
except that is not virtue tense, but 'if ..had not' is a virtue tense.
what does it exactly mean when a 'would have been' is followed by
a clause with a past tense verb?

I don't think V-ing generally changes the stressed pattern in that verb. But
when you turn that verb into the adjective form, it does generally alter
the stress pattern as well as some vowel pronunciation.
Take your word "hypnotize" for example (stress the first syllable, "O" as
the schwa vowel sound ə), its adjective form is "hypnotic" ( stress the
second syllable, "O" as the vowel sound "a").
That's also the case when you turn the verb into its noun form. For example,
