just Fantasy although that is looking damn good all by itself. My Sci-Fi
list last year was only 7 books long, which grew a little with the year, but
it was so short I combined it with UR and Steampunk picks. This year Sci-Fi
warrants a post all its own with loads of debuts and returning stars. The
people claiming Sci-fi is dying or already dead should shear the wool off
their eyes and see what is brewing.

其实俺读这一部感觉,
并没有Vinge上次得奖的那一部A Fire upon the Deep那种深沉的震撼.
当然有些方面的设想和探讨是比较深入, 有伦理意义的
比如星际贸易帝国的构想, 比如对人类思想的控制,
但总的来说内容好象不够丰富, 面并不是太广.
相形之下俺还是更喜欢Neal Stephenson的Cryptonomicon,
这是一本无所不包的大杂烩,
从阴极射线管的工作原理, 到牛奶麦片的最酷的吃法,
从空气涡流的形成过程, 到古希腊神话中诸神之间的复杂关系,
从新几内亚食人部族的生活习性, 到硅谷新兴公司的运作方式,
都有详尽深入的描写探讨,
加上时不时冒出来的极辛辣的幽默,
看这本书实在是非常地愉快.
这本书的主要缺点是太长(900多页),
这么长的书, 读者难免对于结局有很高的期盼,
结果那个尾巴实在是无关痛痒, 令人大失所望.
另外虽说可以看出作者对很多东西都做了不少homework,
才能写得这么细致逼真,
但他对中国的了解明显就只够蒙一蒙老美而已,
比如他以为中国的两种主要方言 |

部曲，越往后我越觉着没意思。剩下的chapterhouse dune, house
atreides/corrino/harkonnen 等等老兄觉得有看头否？
非专职的SF作家像Vinge（退休教授，不过其前妻Joan Vinge是专业SF）, Egan （程序员
http://www.netspace.net.au/~gregegan/ ），因为没有太多商业气息，看起来有时有耳
目一新之感。
这两人的不足是结尾虚弱, 到最后一章老来个flop。A Deepness in the Sky 那个主人公
（甲虫）Sherkaner Underhill的形象多精彩，集牛顿，爱因斯坦，费曼等所有人类天才
为一体。结局突然蹦出来一句他和外面的先进人类一直有联系，这叫什么呀！Permutatio
n City后半部不堪看，只是因为他的前半部太引人入胜了，有computer graphics
expert说那是见过的最好描写。

是简单说点感想，顺便推荐给没有看过的人。
这是我看的第一本VINGE的书，只所以选这本，是因为这本书比较新（1999），而且获了2
000年的Hugo Award，之前也看了许多评论，对它的评价大都不错，因此便买来看了。
故事发生在遥远的将来，人类文明已经在地球以外的的许多星球扎了根，不过由于种种原
因人类按其文明的种类大致分成两类，一类是Emergents，他们崇尚武力，并且发明了控
制人类大脑为之服务的技术，另一类则被成为Qeng
Ho,有自由商人组成，这和FOUNDATION里的商人组织很相似，他们自由穿梭在宇宙之中，
靠自己的先进的技术和信息来控制并影响各个星球上的人类文明。
虽然人类已经探索了许多星球，但是最近才发现外星人的存在，这些外星人行同蜘蛛，有
点特别的是他们生活是周期性的，因为他们所处星球的太阳的活动也是周期性的，在没有
能源照射的时期他们便进行冬眠。
为了与这些外星人取得直接接触，并从中取得潜在的利益，两类人类文明都派出了自己的
探索者，并同时在外星 |

all. I think it is still the best.
I highly recommend all works of Vinge; he is consistently good. His
language may be a little bit dry, but he is very rich in imagination
and his extrapolations are convincing. |

(And I have some reservation about its being "the most influential". :)
When I said Truename is the best, I fully realized everyone has their
own notions of "good"; I probably should have supplemented my
recommendation with more qualification. I think Vinge's works might

"a fire upon the deep" was originally inspired by a
distributed computing seminar he attended many years ago.
and i know he used to be a professor. that's why i had
the impression that he was a cs professor. anyway, vinge
seldom produced novel-length sf work, a disappointment
for fans like me...:( |

我在科奇幻领域里的阅读口味偏向硬科幻，但已经四、五年没有读过新的英文科幻长篇
了，这回心血来潮，决定在这三部里至少读一部。Vernor Vinge和Charles Stross都是
我读过并且非常喜欢的作家，但这回还是决定换换口味，于是先从Peter Watts读起。
当然，主要还是因为一年前就在Sci Fi Weekly的书评专栏里看到过对Blindsight的高
度评价：

总的来说肯定比Vinge那部强。其实雨果奖这个群众到会投票的方法，与其说是评水平
，不如是比人气。今年的5个候选者竟然有3个全文上网，估计就是这原因。
从最主要情节看，Blindsight其实可以称作Solaris的硬科幻版。Rorschach不就是那个
著名的墨迹测验么，当然观察者看到的是自己的心理了。
科幻题材略微偏多偏杂。作者各方面能说上几句而且不犯原则错误，当然是本事。不过
我读的时候好像能分辨出来：哪些是他现买现卖，哪些是他更熟悉的题材，前者就是没
有后者自然流利。而且这么蜻蜓点水的写法，读者学到的也有限。（据说Stross赞
Blindsight曰：“Imagine a neurobiology-obsessed version of Greg Egan...”，
不过Egan同学至少有耐心一个优点，一个关键概念能不惜花三章...）
跟当代其他硬科幻比，小说的人物和人际关系比较可信。例如同是老夫妻的扭曲婚姻关
系，Siri老爸老妈看着就是比Vinge笔下的顾诗人两口子真实。
