大约两年前的某个夏日，我拖着小人和小人爹去看望一位刚搬来加州的旧识朋友，彼时
她历经了几年美国中西部玉米地的生物博士生涯，携同读完博士的丈夫拖着一娃刚折腾
到加州读博后。饭桌上她非常严肃地问了我一个问题：“你还要回国么？”（大约是觉
得我已经在加州住了五年不会再折腾了吧）
“对啊！”
她就更加严肃地问了我一个问题：“你这么一定要回国，最重要的原因是什么？”
咱认真思索了一下，回：“我觉得应该是我希望过一种每天起来出门都不知道今天会发
生什么的生活吧。不能接受生活一点不可预料性都没有。”
彼时大概不过二十六七的这位旧友碉堡一会后，由衷地表示："我觉得吧，都有孩子了
也快三十了，好像应该settledown（安顿）了吧。”

computer programmers who where laid off who before doing so put what I call
a "time bomb" in their programs. I got stuck "inheriting" their code and

我刚刚才知道。1982年底特律的华裔移民Vincent Chin（陈果仁）被两个仇恨亚裔的白
人用棒球棍猛击头部致死。两个白人被控二级谋杀（second-degree murder），结果法
院裁决为过失杀人（manslaughter），判三年缓刑，牢都不用坐。另罚款三千，并付
780美元的庭审费。亚裔组织大规模集体抗议，案件轰动全美，被认为是美国亚裔组织
反歧视运动的起源。
法庭迫于压力重审，先判了个25年徒刑，但两年后又推翻了，因为发现有律师教唆见证
人。最后作为民事诉讼取得庭外和解，两个凶手各向陈家赔偿5万和150万美元。
庭外和解后，陈果仁的妈妈离开美国伤心地，回到广州老家。2001年她回美国治病
，2002年去世，去世之前以儿子的名义设立奖学金，由American Citizens for
