这个大概的原因我想可能如下：真正的应用数学就是要“应用”，要解决实际的问题，先建立model，然后计算，加上分析。
从目前应用数学的研究工具来讲，用得最多的一个是方程：ODE涉及Applied Dynamic system，另外就是PDE，各种
偏微方程，或者尺度更小一点的kinetic equation. 另一大类就是概率统计。当然这两大类的结合就是SDE,SPDE。。。
还有就是相应的计算。计算我没有单列，但是因为计算是研究的一个不可分割的一部分。一个对PDE的理论没有深刻理解的搞计算的人，是不可能搞出真正的好的东西的. 真正好的那些计算专家，对理论的理解一定相当深刻，譬如P.Lax, A.Majda, 中国人中的Weinan, E, Yizhao Hou 所谓搞计算搞应用的人，理论功底都是非常牛的。
总的来讲，目前的应用数学用得最多的是分析的工具。所以就给人一种很多overlap的感觉，本来就是。其他的工具，慢慢的也在用上，譬如微分几何，现在搞图像，甚至搞plasma计算的人都在使用。代数主要用在密码上，目前。
