m******1 发帖数: 86 | 1 Earlier this month, received a phone call from one of my CPA mentees saying
he was fired by the company. As he is still in I-140 stage, he need to find
a job asap to keep his immigration status. What makes me really sad is I
knew this might just be the beginning.
This mentee had been in accounting for a while, first in regional firm (top
100 at least) as auditors and then work as internal auditors in big
companies for a while. Under a good manager, he can be productive and he is
willing to work late hours if necessary. He is a very good lunch mate and I
always enjoy chatting with him. His English speaking is not bad at all and
I knew he dated white chicks before. Because of his position, he had
connections throughout the company and a lot times he got insider
information even earlier than me…… To most people, he sound like a
complete package.
As both are Chinese and same ager (he is one year younger than me), we were
friends at first, beside talking gossips and all- guys’-favorite hot chicks
, he started to open his heart to me (maybe because I’m a very good
listener). He talked about the challenges he had and complained about his
starting salary are too low. He talked about his contributions to his
department and also feud he had with another senior internal auditors (gay
gay), he talked about his career futures and asked how I got promoted to
manager in the company. Slowly and surely, I became his mentor.
I walked him through the whole process of green card application, possible
options and related strategies to approach management, he made it.
I told him a feud with under performance black gay gay in his own department
would not do him any good. Advise taken, the heard-everywhere dagger
stabber occurred less and less until one day his rival leave the company
I encouraged him to ask 10% raise (10% is the psychological upper limit to
any accounting manager without dramatically hurting future raise potentials)
and laid out a plan. Goal achieved even he was not satisfied.
As to the promotion, even I had mentored him 4 years, I still don’t know
how to build a case for him as I never positive he would enjoy managerial
role at all (have to say most CPAs here would not enjoy managerial role even
given the position. Actually, there are a lot accounting jobs make decent
money without risking).
…..
I leave the company
……
He called me and asked how I think XXX, current CAO of that company. I said
the CAO is extremely hard to read. In addition, since he was a senior
manager in PWC, who normally had a really high expectation, betting on him
is high risk and low return.
……
He continued to talk ambitiously in public.
……
He talked to CAO of his desire to be as an accounting manager, and didn’t
get clear answer.
He became unhappy with CAO in public although he still perform.
……
He called me and really upset: “I repeatedly asked XXX (director of
accounting who was his manager) whether I’m her long term plan and she
always said yes, I worked so hard for her…… I worked till midnight every
day in the past 2 weeks……I finished the project yesterday and I get fired
today……”
