I received a question today about cold emailing and thought maybe I should
share my answer here with more people:
some may advise against cold emailing, and if you feel this way,
please share with us why this is the case so we can all have
better understanding of different views.
my personal opinion - given that a lot of the candidates are a bit "
desparate"so maybe every little bit helps. As long as you only send emails
to no more than two actuaries in one company, you can start off introducing
yourself and keep it short, and then ask them if they know of any entry
level openings they may have. don't go to chief actuaries becausethey are
busy and they get tons of emails, yours may get deleted without much care. I
would suggest choosing the ones that are mid level - new fellows and front
line managers, even if they are not the hiring manager, they are more likely
than chief actuaries to read your email and forward your resume to the
right people if they like what they see.
Here is what I do when I get cold emails - i am sure different people do it
differently, but this is what I do just to give you an idea:
I normally click on the attachment right away and quickly scan through the
resume(if it is PDF) and if I like the resume, I come back and read the
email body - because most of them are quite long. if there is nothing
obviously wrong about the email or the resume, and I think it maybe a good
fit, I will forward it to the hirng manager. if there is no opening, I often
forward it to HR department. In two occassions, I liked the resumes but we
didn't have any openings so I called and talked to the candidates and
provided some suggestions. I don't normally write back to the candidates
themselves.
overall, if you are going to do cold emailing: make sure your email is clear
and well organized, error free. and don't keep the hopes too high about
hearing anything back. but always, I do mean ALWAYS be ready to take a
phonecall in case the person calls you back and gives you a phone interview
right then and there!
best of luck everyone. | T*****i 发帖数: 523 | 2 Thank you so much for sharing this.
I have another question for you:
Does the attached format such as .pdf or .doc really make a difference in
one's cold email?
Thanks in advance. | v**n 发帖数: 130 | 3 yes it does. PDF is better because of it's stable formatting.
