东南五州指路易斯安那、密西西比、阿拉巴马、佐治亚和佛罗里达，这五个州分布的响
尾蛇相同，都有三种，即Eastern Diamondback，Timber，Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake，
下面分别介绍一下。
Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
这是所有响尾蛇中体型最大的，也最令人恐惧的。体长90至180厘米，有记录的最大的
个体是2.4米，重34磅。身体颜色是棕色、棕黄色或棕灰色，背上有深色菱形图案，在
接近尾部菱形淡化消失，变成浅色的环形。
头部特写 Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
Timber Rattlesnake
这是美国分布最广的响尾蛇，覆盖东部大半个美国，这种蛇的体长在90至150厘米之间
，颜色是棕黄色或灰色，头上没有条纹或斑点，身体的前三分之一是深色的斑点，接下
来斑点连成深色的横纹，尾巴是全黑的。这种蛇还有一个别名Canebrake，曾经被认为
是Timber的一个亚种，现在的观点是这两种蛇其实是同一种。
Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake
这是最小的响尾蛇之一，体长35-60厘米，颜色是灰色或棕色，背脊有一条红色或锈色
带，背上有深棕色或黑色的斑点。
南北卡罗莱纳州(3种)：Timber，Eastern Diamondback，Carolina Pygmy Rattlesnake
Carolina Pygmy Rattlesnake
与前面提到的Dusky Pygmy很相似，体长40-60厘米，颜色是灰色，背脊有一条红色或锈
色带，背上有深棕色或黑色的斑点。
田纳西州(2种)：Timber, Western Pygmy Rattlesnake
Western Pygmy Rattlesnake
与上面提到的两种Pygmy很相似，体长40-60厘米，颜色是灰色或红色，背脊有一条红色
或锈色带，背上有深棕色或黑色的斑点。
阿肯色州(3种)：Western Diamondback，Timber，Western Pygmy Rattlesnake，前面
都已经介绍过了。
东北二十三州(2种)
美国东北部的二十三个州 (这里所说的二十三州范围如下图所示，向西至明尼苏达、爱
荷华和密苏里，向南至肯塔基和佛吉尼亚) 只有两种响尾蛇，即Timber Rattlesnake和
Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake。后者仅存于美国东北部，实际分布比下面这张图中
黄色面积要小，这里就不具体说明了，有资料提到肯塔基和密苏里也有Carolina Pygmy
Rattlesnake，数量应该比较小。
Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake
这是一种小型响尾蛇蛇，体长是45厘米到75厘米，颜色是棕色或灰色，背上有深色的圆
斑，体侧有两到三排圆斑，腹部一般是黑色，上带黄色或白色的斑纹。

Venomous Snakes
There are only two venomous snakes in Massachusetts - the timber rattlesnake
and the copperhead. (Contrary to popular belief, there are no venomous "
water moccasins" in the Bay State, only harmless water snakes.) Statewide,
populations of our two endangered venomous snakes are believed to number no
more than a few hundred individuals. Due to a host of problems, these
populations are probably still declining despite rigorous efforts to protect
them. Our "rattlers" are now known to exist at only a dozen or so widely
scattered sites in mountainous regions of the state; the distribution of
copperheads is even more restricted. As a result, most of Massachusetts is
completely devoid of venomous serpents.
