1) Artwork copyright -- e.g. you cannot use the same image/picture created
by others without authorization;
2) Game play patent: covering structure/rules of the game, if they are
patented. Note: a) unlike copyright, patent expires much sooner like 20yrs
in the US. b) not all game plays are patented and/or can be patented.
3) Design patent: covering ornamental part of the game (something like "a
square xxx with four rounded edges").
In a nutshell, I think you can create a digital version of 三国杀 if
following is true:
* you draw characters by yourself or use ones from public domain;
* 三国杀 game play is not patented in the US;
* you use a different overall design for the playing cards.
