Camelback Mountain - Echo Canyon (Summit) Trail

Piestewa Peak

Peak (pronounced pye-ESS-tə-wah) was formerly known as Squaw Mountain -
the name was changed a few years ago to honor Lori Piestewa , an American
Indian woman who was killed in the Iraq war. Hike / photos / sightseeing.
Accompanied by Denae and Fred. This climb is approximately 1200 feet
elevation - parking is at 1420', mountain top is 2608'....

Family hiked Squaw Peak Nature Trail. It began a little rainy and overcast,
but turned into a lovely day. The trail was a bit challenging for two little
ones, but all triumphed. Audrey got used to her new backpack carrier (so we
can go on more rugged trails). Ana hiked the whole way by herself, singing
"It's hard to talk, when you're walking on the rocks".

3 hour afternoon hike up the south side of South Mountain and back.
Starting at the warpaint trailhead, take desert classic around to Corona de
Loma and head up the mountain. Once over the peak, you'll head down into a
valley before heading back up to the National trailhead for a few hundred
yards, then head right onto Old Man's trail and back down the mountain to
Secret Trail, then back onto...

Fantastic hike. Descent was via old trail down Catacombs boulder field, not
recommended as that route was very difficult and had problematic
routefinding (note the several places where backtracks were needed).
Wind Cave Trail

Beautiful views, great desert foliage, and a worthwhile destination. Good
intermediate-level hike, enough elevation change to be good exercise without
difficult scrambling. Trail is very well-marked.
