I bought an impala 5 yrs ago and now it has 85k miles. The price was 15.5k+
ttl = 17k then. I check local craigslist for similar impalas, 11 in total,
the average asking price is 8350 and average mileage is 77k. I would
think it is fair to *market* my impala at 7500 - 7700 sold price in a private party
transaction.
So, if the assumption holds, it lose 50% over five years, taking into
consideration of warranty expiration and difference in dealer/private prices.
If you are talking about trade-in or auction, it will be higher but it is
not quite an apple-to-apple comparison as new car was a dealer purchase and
used car is private or trade-in purchase.
FYI.
Recently I bought a '12 Malibu 1LT at 17.5k (the best selling price reported
on this board was about 16.9k for '12 Malibu 1LT). I found local dealers
were selling USED '11 Malibu 1LT (10 of them) at 17.3k - 19.9k (9k - 41k miles
). Average 18.3k @ 30k miles. So, it really does not always hold that used cars are *significantly* cheaper than brand new ones, because there are many incentives for new cars but not so for used ones.
