Citing a fire hazard, Ford is recalling about 11,500 of its new 2013 Escape
crossovers in North America and telling drivers to immediately stop driving
them.
In a media release issued on Thursday, the automaker said the problem was tr
aced to the fuel line on the turbocharged 1.6 liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engi
ne. The line, Ford said, could split.
Escapes with other engines are not affected by the recall.
In its report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford sa
id the surfaces of the fuel line had been “mechanically scored during its m
anufacture” and when installed, the line could develop “a split that can r
esult in a leak.”
The automaker also told N.H.T.S.A. that the sole fire on a customer vehicle
“that may relate to this issue” occurred in Canada on June 18. About 9,300
of the affected vehicles were in the United States, and only 4,800 of the 1
1,500 were sold, Marcey Zwiebel, a Ford spokeswoman, wrote in an e-mail . Th
e others were on dealer lots and would be repaired.
Ms. Zwiebel wrote that the automaker was aware of three fires attributable
to the problem, two of which happened before the vehicles were shipped to de
alers. The automaker was not aware of any injuries, she added.
In an unusual move, Ford advised owners to stop driving their vehicles and s
aid it was “extremely important” that they contact dealers, who would deli
ver loaner vehicles to the customers.
The media release was also an unusual step for Ford, one of the few automake
rs that typically do not issue releases about recalls. Instead, its policy h
as been to respond to questions after the recalls were posted on the Web sit
e of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Ms. Zwiebel wrote that the automaker decided a release was appropriate in th
is case because the automaker wanted to ensure “awareness of this issue amo
ng our affected customers and encourage them to act quickly in contacting th
eir dealer.”
This is the second recall of the new Escape in the last week. The first acti
on was related to improperly installed carpeting that could interfere with a
driver’s application of the brake pedal. Also this week, the safety agency
said it would open a Preliminary Evaluation of unintended acceleration in 2
002-4 models. The evaluation is the first formal step toward a potential rec
all.
Ford described this week’s recalls as voluntary, but once an automaker is a
ware of a safety problem it has no choice but to inform the safety agency wi
thin five business days of its plan for a recall.
Ms. Zwiebel said Ford considered the recall voluntary “because we identifie
d the issue, quickly investigated it, determined there was a common root cau
se among the reports received and we made the decision to take very quick an
d aggressive action.” | p*****c 发帖数: 2858 | 2
