Washington— In the face of a new government investigation, Ford Motor Co.
said Thursday it is recalling nearly 485,000 Escapes to repair sticky gas
pedals that can lead to unintended acceleration incidents.
The recall covers 423,000 2001-04 Escape SUVs with 3-liter V-6 engines and
cruise control, plus 60,000 outside the U.S.
Ford said that because of a lack of clearance between the cruise control
cable and engine cover, a driver may be unable to disengage the throttle
when the cruise control is on.
This is the third recall in two weeks for the Escape.
Last week, Ford recalled 11,500 new 2013 models with 1.6-liter engines
because the fuel lines could leak, and warned owners to immediately stop
driving the new Escapes after three reports of fires in June.
The company also recalled 10,000 2013 Escapes to fix carpet padding that
could interfere with brakes.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation
last week into 730,000 Ford Escapes and the Escape's sister SUV, the Mazda
Tribute, for possible unintended acceleration, after a 17-year-old died in a
January crash in Arizona.
NHTSA has 99 reports alleging incidents of stuck throttles in 2001-04
Escapes and Tributes with V-6 engines.
In addition to the fatality, 13 crashes and nine injuries were reported.
The issue started in December 2004, when Ford recalled 470,000 2002-04
Escapes, describing an accelerator cable assembly defect that could cause
the throttle to stick; Mazda recalled 121,000 2002-04 Tributes.
The automaker sent dealers an updated repair procedure in October 2005.
Mazda did not issue a similar notice.
But by that time, nearly 320,000 Escapes from the 2002-04 model years
already were fixed, and their owners never were informed of the updated
procedure.
The 2002 Ford Escape that crashed in Payson, Ariz., killing Saige Bloom, was
fixed in January 2005, before the update.
Ford said it only learned of Bloom's death last month. The company's field
review committee decided Monday to recall the vehicles.
Dealers will install an engine cover fastener to provide adequate clearance
between the cover and speed control cable connector.
Ford said repair parts will be available in the next few weeks; in the
meantime, owners can have dealers disconnect the speed control cable and
secure it into place.
Thursday's action didn't appease Clarence Ditlow, executive of the Center
for Automotive Safety. Ditlow wrote to Ford CEO Alan Mulally on July 10
urging an immediate recall.
"Rather than replace the defective cruise control cable, Ford uses a cheap
fastener to raise the engine cover to try to provide enough clearance so the
cable doesn't jam," Ditlow said. He wants NHTSA to fine Ford for failing to
act faster.
Ford, however, says the cable itself is not the problem, but rather the
clearance.

2000: Several Ford Explorers were reported about in the UK by a Channel 4
news program where the vehicle was already moving at speed and experienced
sudden acceleration.[14]
2006: The 2004 model year Ford Mustang Cobra was recalled by Ford for
accelerator pedals that failed to return to idle after being fully pressed.[

2008: Incidents involving the 2005 Kia Amanti and Kia Sephia had been
reported that were preceded by a racing or highly-revving engine.[16][17]
2009: Toyota Avalon displays unintended acceleration without floor mat;
observed by dealer.[18]
2009: Chase Weir's experience with sudden acceleration in his Ford Explorer
while driving on a freeway was reported by a number of news organisations,
along with the released 000 emergency recordings of the incident.[19]
2009-2010: Several vehicles were recalled in the 2009–2010 Toyota vehicle
recalls, which resulted in suspension of production and sales of many of
Toyota's most popular models, including the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry,
Toyota Tacoma pickups, Toyota Avalon, Toyota Matrix, Pontiac Vibe, and more.
