It depends on your state.
Some states have 5-day grace period. In other words, your existing safe
inspection expires on March 31 but you are fine as long as you do it before
April 5. Next year you can do it in May before May 5. It's how a DS saves a
few bucks.
Check w/ your DMV to make sure.
