the engine is exactly the same (Toyota thought of
dropping the counter balanced shaft, to lower
cost, but in the end kept it).
the new camry is seriously "de-contented"/cheapened
from the earlier version. sould insulation is
one such area. Get your friend's 97 side by side
with yours. Look at the sould insulation layer
on the firewall. on the new one, it's about
2/3 of the thickness of the old one. Also, the old
one has a triple rubber seal on all four doors, vs.
only a double seal on the new o | l***s

well, I found that the size of engine of '99 camry
is smaller than my '96 camry. also, 97 and later camry
use DOHC engine, I doubt whether 96 camry has such engine.
the horsepower of 97 and later is 13 horsepower bigger
than the old generation.
I admit the sound insulation of the old generation
may be better, but the nature noise from the engine of
newer generation is smaller. Some magazine judge
the newer generation of camry as the best car ever
built in usa.
