Baseball season opens on Wednesday, with the formality of reporting day for
pitchers and catchers on nine teams.
There is an unusually high quotient of hope coursing through the game this
spring. Every division will be competitive. There is no overwhelming
favorite. Even the New York Yankees, with their projected payroll at about $
205 million, are not a sure thing.
