Image Sports stores, but only because it was free.
Paul Russo, who owns the St. Louis area franchises, said at about 1:30 p.m.
that the Chesterfield Mall store had just about given away its entire stock
of about 150 shirts and jerseys that would usually sell for between $14.99
and $129.99. Other area locations gave away a similar amount of Pujols
apparel, he said.
Russo said he made a spur-of-the-moment decision to give away the
merchandise. Russo explained, "It's not about the money, just like Albert
said. Except he lied, and we didn't."
Russo acknowledges that, realistically, he wouldn't have been able to get
very much for the Pujols items after news broke that the future Hall of
Famer would play for the Los Angeles Angels.
In fact, Russo said, fan uncertainty about Pujols' future already had caused
sales of his jerseys to slow to a trickle. And Pro Image had stopped re-
ordering Pujols merchandise weeks ago for fear that it could be stuck with
worthless stock.
By 2 p.m. only three Pujols shirts remained at the Chesterfield Mall
location. About a half-dozen shoppers milled about the store when Jeremy
Guyton of St. Charles entered the store.
"You guys really giving Pujols stuff away today?'' Guyton asked.
At that, several of other shoppers echoed the question, seemingly interested
in a bargain.
"You're giving it away?"
"I'd give it away, too'' said shopper Diane Baer, also of St. Charles. "It's
a shame. It's just a shame."
But Guyton, who took, one of the free shirts, wasn't criticizing Pujols for
his decision.
"Anybody in here presented with that much money would have taken it," Guyton
said.
Maybe so, but they didn't take his jersey.
When all the customers had left, two free jerseys still sat untouched on a
front rack.
Meanwhile, on eBay, Mark Feltman is bullish on Pujols apparel -- or, at
least one particular shirt of his own design. The red vinyl letters on the
white T-shirts read: "Albert Pujols is the greediest man on Earth."
Feltman, of O'Fallon, Ill., is selling the shirts for $14.99 plus $7
shipping. About an hour after he listed the shirts for sale on Thursday
morning, he said he hadn't yet sold any.
That's OK, Feltman said, because he isn't trying to make a quick buck.
"I don't plan to make any money on this, but I want to make a point," he
