Following the conclusion of the 26th BFA Asian Baseball Championship the
International Baseball Federation (IBAF) releases the year-end Men’s
Baseball World Rankings. Cuba remains at the top of International Baseball.
But their lead over the runner-ups U.S.A., Japan and Korea shrunk throughout
the 2012 season.
There are currently eight countries in the IBAF Men’s Baseball World
Rankings with 450 points and more. The 2013 World Baseball Classic next
March therefore could cause a major shakeup, as any of the top seven teams
could move into first place mathematically.
Chinese Taipei tops all countries with 205 points in the calendar year 2012,
followed by Canada, Japan and the United States. They moved into fifth
place during the process, passing by the Netherlands, Canada and Venezuela.
Team CT profits from winning the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in
November, third-place finishes at the IBAF 15U Baseball World Championship
and the IBAF 18U Baseball World Championship, a second place the BFA Asian
Baseball Championship and their win over Cuba during the Thunder Series.
Canada also won a World Baseball Classic Qualifier and placed second at the
IBAF 18U Baseball World Championship in Seoul, Korea to accumulate 130
points in 2012.
Japan followed in third place in this year’s rankings with 123 points
thanks to two victories over Cuba, the title at the BFA Asian Baseball
Championship and a sixth place at the IBAF 18U Baseball World Championship.
Team USA (100 points), Venezuela (66 points), Spain (65 points) and Brazil (
63.73 points) also left their mark on the 2012 season in International
Baseball. Cuba (13th in 2012) only accumulated 40 points this year with
their second-place finish at the IBAF 15U Baseball World Championship in
Mexico.

About the IBAF Baseball Rankings
Under the current system used, points are awarded to member nations based
purely on their final position in recognized international tournaments and
encompasses a four-year cycle.
Points are awarded according to the following table:
Final position
Points awarded

50
2nd
40
3rd
30
4th

5th - 2nd-last*
Spread evenly between 15 & 1

A multiplier is used in awarding points, based on the prestige of the
tournament and the quality of the teams involved. The table below reflects
the changes in the international baseball schedule recently approved by the
IBAF. Below are the multipliers that will be used beginning in 2012.
World Baseball Classic 6x (Winner receives 50 points, multiplied
by 6 for a total of 300 points)
Premier 12 6x
WBC Qualifiers * (Pool winner receives 50 points
, 2nd – 40 pts, 3rd – 30 pts, 4th – 15 pts)
21U and 18U 2x
15U and 12U 1x
Continental Championships, Continental Qualifiers, and all other IBAF-
sponsored events will receive a multiplier based on the number of top-10
teams from the previous year-end rankings that are entered in the tournament
. (See below)
1.00× - Continental Championships/Qualifying Tournaments, where 3 or more
competing teams are in the previous year-end top 10
0.75× - Continental Championships/Qualifying Tournaments, where 2 competing
teams are in the previous year-end top 10
0.50× - Continental Championships/Qualifying Tournaments, where 1 competing
team is in the previous year-end top 10
0.25× - Continental Championships/Qualifying Tournaments, where no
competing teams are in the previous year-end top 10
The Thunder Series and Samurai Japan competitions in 2012 were duly
sanctioned by the IBAF as per the directive of IBAF Executive, as such, 25
points were awarded per win. Note: only those sanctioned competitions that
are solely between NFs “National Teams” will have IBAF rankings
implications (that is to say, Cuba vs CPBL will remain only “exhibition”
games with no impact on rankings).
