Jeremy Lin’s Promotion to New York Knicks Starting Lineup: Better Late Than
Never

New York Knicks starting point guard Jeremy Lin has become an overnight
sensation for making the orange and blue fun to watch again and being
integral to three consecutive victories.
His exciting play and positive impact on his teammates, though, also compels
those of us interested in this fascinating story to ask ourselves, "What
took Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni so long to realize the piece his team has
desperately needed all season was sitting on the bench?"
D'Antoni's obtuseness as it concerns working Lin into the starting lineup is
actually being cited by the blogosphere as yet another reason he needs to
be fired, due to what it may have cost the Knicks in the standings. I
consider it a classic case of "better late than never," because, as New York
Yankees legend Yogi Berra once remarked, "It's getting late early out there
."
Of course, Berra was referring to the massive shadow that would overtake
left field at Yankee Stadium during sunset, but you can apply that Yogiism
to how quickly D'Antoni's expiration date in New York was approaching behind
a recent 2-11 stretch.
Now his job may actually be saved by Lin, the very player he was "afraid" to
start.
"I was afraid to do anything, we're already in a little bit of a crisis and
I just can't be, you know, pulling straws, just trying something, a whim," D
'Antoni said on Tuesday. "Other players would be looking at me like 'You
crazy?' if it didn't work. Now he just kept showing stuff a little bit, a
little bit. When he got one opportunity, he took advantage of it."
New York's offensive cohesiveness this week—without the services of Amar'e
Stoudemire or Carmelo Anthony, mind you—cannot be denied.
Forward Steve Novak scored 19 points two straight nights in wins over the
Utah Jazz and Washington Wizards, largely because Lin attracted defenders
and regularly found the skilled shooter open on the perimeter. Rookie Iman
Shumpert appears to be inspired of late, which can arguably be attributed to
Lin's promotion to starter and energetic pace. The 21-year-old logged eight
points, six assists and three steals against Utah at Madison Square Garden
on Monday and contributed 17 points at Verizon Center in Washington on
Wednesday.
That said, no player has benefited more from Lin's play than center Tyson
Chandler, who's thriving as the point guard's No. 1 pick-and-roll partner as
Stoudemire—who'll reportedly return on Monday—mourns the loss of his
older brother in Florida. The 7-foot-1 Chandler's alley-oop dunks are more
frequent with Lin running D'Antoni's vaunted, fast-paced offense, and his 25
points vs. Washington marked a season-high.
Lin's emergence has spawned the Twitter-trending neologism "Linsanity," a
phenomenon Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson witnessed in person this
week.
"The excitement he has caused in the Garden, man, I hadn't seen that in a
long time," the five-time NBA Finals champion raved. "The way he can
penetrate, and can get in that lane, and either shoot it or dish it, has
really made them a better basketball team."
Johnson's Lakers, coincidentally, will face the Knicks at the Garden Friday
night.
