Linsanity Takes Hold
Feb. 17 -- A week ago we joked about Jeremy Lin making his way here. One hot
week of basketball wasn't going to be enough to get the best underdog story
the NBA had ever seen into the MVP conversation.
Two ridiculously hot weeks, a record-setting debut to his career as a
starting point guard, an undefeated Knicks team with him as a starter,
breathing life into a franchise, city and its fan base and the and the
complete takeover of the global sports conversation, however, is more than
enough to get Lin into the KIA Race to the MVP Ladder conversation this time
around.
So he barely cracked the list, sliding in at No. 10. We couldn't totally
discount the first seven weeks of the season, when some of his teammates and
coaches barely knew his name. But from the start we've made it clear that
this territory is reserved for players in the here-and-now, performing day-
in and day-out ... not for guys who operate solely on reputation.
The undeniable factor working in Lin's favor is that since he's been
inserted into the Knicks' rotation (remember, his breakout game saw him
come off the bench against the Nets. He joined the starting lineup the next
game) they have not lost. And he's been the catalyst in all seven of those
wins.
"What impresses me is his confidence," TNT analyst Steve Kerr said. "I'm
amazed by his guts every night at the end of the game. He wants the ball in
his hands. It's really become his team."
Have we been infected by "Linsanity?"
No doubt about it. Because when it's piggy-backing on "Winsanity," we take
notice around here.
Lin's ascent has overshadowed some other moving and shaking done around here
, including Chris Paul's overtaking Kobe Bryant for the No. 3 spot and Dirk
Nowitzki's climb back into the Top 15, with the Mavericks rolling the way
they have in recent weeks, he made a strong case for at Top 10 spot as well.
With the Spurs on a league-best nine-game win streak right now, he did make
that leap into the Top 10, coming in at No. 9, giving the group a point
guard-heavy feel.
Once again, you can play your way onto this list and you have to play to
play to stay on the list. But there's no way you or anyone else can talk you
onto the list.
