The Minnesota Timberwolves and starting point guard Ricky Rubio have until
Oct. 31 to complete a contract extension. Should the two sides fail to
finalize a deal, Rubio will be a restricted free agent next July. At this
time, free agency is the likely outcome if Rubio's agent doesn't lower his
demands.
"Rubio is on notice. The Wolves are trying to sign him to an extension, and
so far his agent, Dan Fegan, is balking at the idea of a 4-year, $43 million
deal," 1500 ESPN contributor Darren Wolfson tells Sportando.com. "That's
plenty for a player of Rubio's caliber. It's a lot more than Atlanta point
guard Jeff Teague makes -- maybe a better player -- and is what Golden State
All-Star guard Stephen Curry makes. But Fegan is seeking the 5-year max.
That's not happening. The situation is pointing toward Rubio being a
restricted free agent next summer. In other words, the 2014-2015 season is
huge for Rubio."
Wolfson is correct that Minnesota's offer to Rubio is very fair and some NBA
executives likely believe the deal is too much. With that said, Fegan is a
master at getting his clients top contracts, even when they don't deserve it
, and he he might be able to do that in 2015 for Rubio via an offer sheet
from another team.
If Rubio wants to up his market, he needs to become a better shooter. Last
season Rubio shot 38.1 percent from the field and for his career he's only
made 36.8 percent. According to Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune, the Wolves
have hired a shooting coach to help Rubio and other players improve that
