There was a fair amount of controversy the other day when LeBron James said
that Stephen Curry may not have been the most valuable player in the NBA. It
’s a discussion that seems to happen every year, that “best” does not
necessarily equal “most valuable,” which in James’ defense is a fair
point. This year it wasn’t necessarily true – in addition to all the other
insane stats Curry threw down, he also led the league in metrics like win
shares and value over replacement player – but on a larger level, James has
a fair point.
Except, James wasn’t really talking on a larger level, as he was,
essentially, saying that Curry didn’t necessarily have more value to his
team than everyone else. Maybe James thought that player was himself, maybe
he thought it was Russell Westbrook, maybe he thought it was, like, DeMarcus
Cousins, no one knows. (Ok not really, he totally meant himself, but
whatever). All we know is that James may not think that the most valuable
player was the guy who won the MVP.
As for how said guy reacted to James’ proclamation, well, let’s call Curry
’s response “general indifference.”
“I’ve gotten really good at ignoring people,” Curry said. “So that is
the theme of the last two years.” | z**********i
