Free agency is where the fun begins. Everybody dreams of signing Kevin Duran
t. While I would totally take Kevin Durant if he wanted to join up with his
old buddy Reggie Jackson, it is not really that realistic.
Looking at all of the players under contract, plus the cap holds for the dra
ft picks and Andre Drummond, the Pistons are looking at about $12 million in
cap space based on my math. However, some of those contracts are non-guaran
teed or team options. One such contract is Joel Anthony, and I will decline
his player option to gain an additional 2.5 million in cap space. I will als
o get rid of Lorenzo Brown's non-guaranteed contract worth about $1 million.
I still like Spencer Dinwiddie and am holding out hope that he can still fi
gure things out, so I am holding onto him for now.
I am now looking at about $15 million in cap room on a projected $92 million
salary cap.
It is now time to get to work. Logic would say to use this cap room to sign
a player at each position of need. However, I am not much of a logical think
er, so I am dumping all of my cap room on a backup point guard. Not all of i
t , but a majority of it. That backup point guard is Jeremy Lin.
Jeremy Lin burst onto the scene in this league during Linsanity. It lead to
a big contract with Houston where he proceeded to be kind of meh. He moved o
nto the Lakers and had similar results. However, he signed a two year deal w
ith the Charlotte Hornets last year that has a player option. He was fantast
ic off the bench for Charlotte, and was a large part of their turnaround las
t season.
I would expect Jeremy Lin to decline his player option for about $8 million
because of his solid season and the fact that the cap is rising. He is going
to get paid, and although he says he would like to stay in Charlotte, it wo
uld be wise to decline his option and go for more money.
Jeremy Lin is arguably the best backup point guard available on the market,
and it is going to be expensive to woo him out of Charlotte. However, I thin
k a 4 year deal worth about $56 million should be enough to get the job done
. Obviously, I would like him for a bit less, but I just don't really see th
at happening.
I know you are probably thinking I am crazy to pay a backup point guard almo
st as much as our starting point guard. However, that is the nature of the m
arket with the increasing cap. I think backup point guard is the most import
ant position on this team because of Reggie Jackson's stamina issues.
Jeremy Lin was effective playing off the ball with a similar point guard to
Reggie Jackson in Kemba Walker. Jeremy Lin isn't a good defender, but he is
also not bad, and still an upgrade defensively over Reggie Jackson in my eye
s. Plus, he is a 35 percent 3 point shooter for his career. I would trust ou
r 2nd unit in the hands of Jeremy Lin and it would be huge for Reggie Jackso
n to have a backup the caliber of Jeremy Lin.
I think Jeremy Lin found a role with Charlotte that fit him very well. The P
istons can offer a similar role on another up-and-coming young team with a c
ontract that provides him long-term security.
You may be thinking, "You dimwit, you forgot about backup power forward. Don
't tell me that you are just going to bring back Anthony Tolliver and rely o
n him."
Of course not, I will use my Stan Van Gundy and Jeff Bower sorcery to acquir
e a power forward. The piece that I will dangle to make this happen is Jodie
Meeks. You cannot have an offseason plan without a Jodie Meeks trade, it is
one of the rules of this project.

Jeremy Lin’s future depends on his goals
Jeremy Lin is looking for the opportunity that offers him the greatest
chance to become the best player he can be. This statement can be
interpreted in different ways, but based on his past experiences, it is not
a stretch to think the announcement means one of two things.
Either Lin wants to be a starter, or he wants to play for a contending team.
The delineation between the two choices exists because of the abundance of
All-Star worthy point guards in the league. If Lin wants to compete and win,
it will most likely be as a sixth man.
If he wants to be a starter, his future lies with a rebuilding (and probably
irrelevant) team.
Statistically, Lin appears to be the best player he can be as a point guard
and the main ball handler. According to Nylon Calculus, as a point guard
where he played a little over one-third of his minutes this season, Lin
averaged 18.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per 36
minutes.
As a shooting guard, he just isn’t as effective. His numbers diminished in
his move to an off-ball role. Obviously, this didn’t’ stop Lin from being
a key member of the rotation and contributor to Charlotte’s unexpected
postseason berth, but the numbers suggest that he may be better off being
the dominant ball handler on whatever team he lands on.
Putting aside Lin’s stats and possible wishes, a return to Charlotte seems
improbable. The Hornets have an unusual number of important free agents, and
Lin doesn’t seem to be a top priority for the franchise despite his role
in their turnaround campaign. Much of Charlotte’s cap space looks to be
spent in re-signing swingman Nicolas Batum and power forward Marvin Williams.
General manager Rich Cho has even mentioned acquiring a rim protector to
defend the paint. That doesn’t leave much money for Lin, who opted out of
his contract where he was slated to make a little over $2 million next
season. Though money doesn’t seem to be the chief motivator for Lin, it’s
a reality that he’ll be seeking a pay raise. It’s not out of the realm of
possibility that Lin makes Buzz City his home for a few more years, but the
evidence doesn’t seem to favor it.
Keeping in mind Charlotte’s current predicament, if Lin does leave
Charlotte for a starting job, two candidates stand out among the league: the
Philadelphia 76ers and the Brooklyn Nets.
He has a history with both organizations’ coaching staffs. Mike D’Antoni,
Lin’s coach from the Linsanity days, is now the associate head coach in
Philadelphia while Kenny Atkinson, D’Antoni’s former assistant during Lin
’s run with the New York Knicks, is the new coach of the Nets.
Along with the relationships, both teams are in desperate need of a veteran
point guard. The current guard situation for the 76ers and Nets is less than
ideal. They would benefit from Lin’s playmaking and experience. The only
hiccup to these scenarios is the fact that Lin would be relegating himself
to teams that have no immediate hope of contending.
Clearly this is an outsider’s view, so I can’t pretend to know what drives
Lin. Though if it is a choice between becoming a starter or being on a
contender, then it comes to what he believes is most important: recognition
or relevance. |
