When the Lakers had let Gail Goodrich go to free agency prior to the 1976-77
season, they had no idea how significant Goodrich's departure would be for the
team's future. Because Goodrich signed with the New Orleans Jazz as a veteran
free agent, the Jazz had to compensate the Lakers. New Orleans did so by
giving Los Angeles three draft picks, including its first-round pick in 1979.
