I will leave his lab soon. He is trying to find a good replacement ASAP. The
offer will be decided right after the CV review and phone interview.

I agree with you. I once worked in three labs. The first two PIs are really tough. What everyone need in their scientific training is a good mentor but not a boss. This PI was benefited from a Chinese PI before he received RO1 award. His only postdoc was also a Chinese and got a faculty position. He think most of Chinese here are smart and hard working and this is why he prefer to hire Chinese. That doesn't mean he like to push the guy in his lab. Actually he is so nice and smart.
