RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
• Designed and performed experiments to investigate the embryonic
development of chicken under various cholesterol-depleted conditions.
• Modified and improved the yolk replacement technique.
• Determined the cholesterol requirement for embryos to develop,
hatch, and grow normally.
• Determined the toxic level of beta-cyclodextrin residues for
embryos.
• Determined the cholesterol concentration of various tissues from
cholesterol-depleted chicken embryos
• Formulated and prepared practical diets for nutritional
experiments with emphasis on methionine, choline, and betaine.
• Designed and performed three experiments involving 640 Single-
Comb White Leghorn (SCWL) each for a 2-month period to investigate and
quantify the sparing effect of betaine and choline on the methionine
requirement of layers.
• Studied the performance, e.g., egg production, egg weight,
specific gravity, and feed intake, of laying hens fed practical corn-soy
diets with different levels of methionine, choline, and betaine.
• Studied the economic benefit obtained using the sparing effect on
the methionine requirement of betaine and choline.
TECHNIQUES
Techniques used in the doctoral research – Yolk replacement technique;
cholesterol extraction from both tissues and egg yolk; high performance
liquid chromatography (HPLC) for cholesterol analysis; toxic residues
determination; liposome preparation; Lowry assay; gel electrophoresis;
designed and prepared the cholesterol-depleted egg yolk using an aseptic
technique
Techniques used in the masters research - Diet formulation and preparation
of practical diets; HPLC for amino acids analysis; specific gravity and
Haugh unit measurements
Technique used in other research – Gas chromatography; thin layer
chromatography
Techniques learned in various biochemical and molecular biology laboratory
courses – Protein and enzyme purification and characterization; sub-cloning
; western, southern and northern blotting; polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
