Posting Title: Research Scientist/Research Associate/Electrobiochemist
Brief Introduction of Gate Fuels Inc.:
“Imagination, Innovation, Implementation --- Enabled Technologies for a
Green Clean World”
Gate Fuels Inc. is a research start-up firm based in Blacksburg, VA, with
the goal of developing microbial and cell-free platform technologies that
enable low-cost production of biochemicals, biofuels and electricity. The
first platform is based on industrially-safe Bacillus subtilis. This microbe
has the capacity to convert cellulosic biomass directly to value-added
biofuels and biochemicals in a single step, called consolidated
bioprocessing (CBP). The second platform is the synthetic enzymatic pathway
biotransformation (SyPaB), a cell-free system that converts carbohydrates to
hydrogen or electricity directly, with 100% efficiency. Gate Fuels is a
pioneer in the development of cell-free systems for industrial biocommodity
production.
Position Description:
Gate Fuels Inc. is seeking a talented, motivated, and creative scientist to
join the cell-free enzymatic fuel cell team. Gate Fuels Inc. is currently
funded by NSF SBIR I to develop a high-power and high-energy-density
platform that can convert sugars to electricity through enzymatic fuel cells
. During the past 1.5 years, we have received three SBIR I grants from NSF
and DOE. Our goal of this project is to develop bio-inspired sugar
biobatteries (sugar powered-enzymatic fuel cells) featuring four appealing
advantages: (i) biodegradability, (ii) safety, (iii) high energy storage
density (e.g., 400 Wh electricity/kg for a 20% (w/v) maltodextrin solution,
nearly three times of that for lithium ion batteries), and (iv) fast
refilling by adding a sugar solution. EFCs would have broad potential
applications, such as rechargeable battery chargers (e.g., cellular phone
chargers for outdoor uses or portable military devices), educational toy
kits, and disposable (primary) batteries. In the future, miniaturized sugar-
powered EFCs could potentially replace some secondary (rechargeable)
batteries.
As a scientist within the R&D team and the future PI for NSF SBIR II, you
will apply your research and development skills of biological fuel cells and
/or biosensors, protein purification and characterization, and protein
engineering. Salary, fringe benefits, and employee compensation stock option
will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Specific responsibilities:
Perform and complete the tasks assigned by the group leader and generate a
final report;
Design and assembly enzymatic fuel cells for testing and demonstration;
Optimizing enzyme use for maximum power output;
Purify recombinant thermostable enzymes in relatively large scales;
Prepare NSF SBIR II proposal;
Help write a business plan for attaching venture capitals;
Conduct trouble shooting and implement technology solutions
Communicate research progress and objectives clearly, frequently, and
effectively.
Minimum Requirements:
Ph.D. or equivalent in electrobiochemistry, biofuel cells, biosensors,
biochemistry, biomolecular engineering, or a related field and 2+ years of
laboratory experience in the related areas.
Proficient in biological fuel cell or biosensor assays.
Be familiar with DNA cloning, protein expression and purification
technologies.
Strong work ethic and enjoy working in a fast-paced, team-oriented
environment.
Ability to follow instructions and company policies and compliance with
safety procedures.
Demonstrated track record of problem solving and innovation.
Excellent organization and time management skills.
Experience with HPLC and GC analysis is preferred.
Past experience with enzymatic fuel cells is preferred.
