Harvard Pay for Top Money Managers Rose 50% to $49.3 Million
Harvard University, the world’s wealthiest school, paid its top six
endowment managers a combined $49.3 million in 2013, a 50 percent increase
from the year before.
Stephen Blyth, who oversees the endowment, made the most at $11.5 million,
according to the university. At the time, he was head of public markets at
Harvard Management Co. and has since replaced Jane Mendillo, who left in
December. Mendillo was paid $9.6 million in 2013, as was Alvaro Aguirre-
Simunovic, the endowment’s natural resources portfolio manager.
Harvard’s investment returns have lagged peers such as Yale University, and
some alumni have criticized endowment managers’ pay as excessive. Last
year, the $36.4 billion endowment posted a 15.4 percent investment return,
the second worst in the Ivy League.
The compensation includes bonuses that can be clawed back in future years if
managers don’t deliver, the university said. Harvard’s endowment has
generated $11.6 billion over the last five years to support academics,
financial aid and research, according to Paul Finnegan, a trustee and
treasurer.
“Harvard is fortunate to have a strong leadership and investment team” at
its endowment, Finnegan said in a statement.
The university also released a tax filing showing that President Drew Faust
in 2013 was paid a total of $1.1 million, including $779,283 in base pay, as
well as the value of housing and other benefits. That was a 6 percent
increase from the year before. David Ginty, a neuroscientist and development
biologist, was the highest-paid Harvard faculty member, with compensation
of $1.2 million, according to the filing.
