To parents of our newly admitted students:
We learned earlier today—as many of you will have heard—that a Boston
University graduate student was shot and killed early this morning shortly
after midnight approximately one mile west of our campus. Boston Police and
Boston University Police are investigating the circumstances of this
dreadful crime.
We are, first of all, deeply saddened at the loss of one of our students.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the student’s family and friends.
I am writing to parents of newly admitted students because I can appreciate
and understand that a tragedy like this is unsettling. I want to provide
important information about the incident and how we approach safety and
security at Boston University.
First, the shooting occurred, as I noted above, roughly a mile from campus
and outside the area where our Boston University police officers routinely
patrol. The shooting appears to be an isolated incident. We invest heavily
in campus security. Our police force of 54 officers is fully deputized and
continuously patrols our entire campus area.
Second, all freshmen are required to live on campus. We guarantee on-campus
housing for all four years for students who wish to stay on campus. We
strongly encourage undergraduate students to stay in our residence life
system, both because of the sense of community that this confers and because
we are better able to provide the highest possible level of security. Our
large residence halls have a security assistant at all entrances. Access to
smaller “brownstone” residences is monitored through card swipe access.
Our escort security service offers walking escorts to students—on request—
from one on-campus location to another.
Third, we work closely with the City of Boston on security issues for the
neighborhoods in our vicinity.
Boston University is an urban university. Our urban setting creates
innumerable enriching and inspiring opportunities for our students. I can
assure you that we will work very hard to ensure the safety of your son or
daughter and provide thoughtful and appropriate guidance so he or she will
know how to safely make the best of our urban setting.
I hope to see your son or daughter in our freshman class this fall. Please
contact me at p*******[email protected] or Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore at
k******[email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.
Yours sincerely,
Robert A. Brown
