but your shape and concentration of values are plus. This hand is better than
the average 17 (K&R gives it 19.20, indeed). Even though it's not odds-on to
find a 4-4 H fit, you still want to describe your hand accurately as pd's hand
shape and value can vary.

If you decide to bid 2H. I have to admit its legitimacy. But maybe you
are not quite aware of what you are doing.
Given the 1NT response, most likely, you are going to play in notrump and
won't have any crazy dream of making a slam. Thus the only problem left
is whether you bid a game or not. Who are going to make the decision for you?
obviously, you should consult your partner. The most straightforward way to
do it is giving a 2NT invitation.

In standard system, 1D-2nt shows 19-21 points, very likely 2nt would push your
pd to 3nt.
But 2H shows 17+, now it's your pd's turn. He knows you are 17+, if he respond
2nt, it's a sign that he probably doesn't has extra value. If he bid 3c, I
would take that as invitation for 3nt and go for it. If he bid 3D, I would
most likely pass.
pd's 1nt shows 6-10 points and no 4 cards in major. Given that, I think game
chance is slimmer than pa

very much. Say, partner has some garbage like
Tx QJx Qxxx Axx, do you think partner will ever consider 5D after your 2N
rebid?
This problem is also somewhat system-related, if you have ways to sign off
after a reverse, then reversing with a good 17 is really not a crime.
You are right in that you lack info to decide now, so convey them. And I don't

The point is that your hand is not balanced.
you aren't sure where you belong to.
if pd has
Sxxx HQx DQxxx CAxxx
you should play 5D.
if pd has:
Sxxx Hxx DQxx CAQxxx, you should have reasonable play in 3NT.
if pd has a minimum hand, you should play 2NT.
if pd has:
Sxxx HAQJ DQx Cxxxxx, the right contract can even be 4H.
if you bid 2H, you can find all the reasonable spot.

is worse than 3-3, while 3N is on a lead. And there might be some blockage in
3NT, too.

you may reverse dummy and ruff some clubs even when opps tap you.
you may only lose 1S, 1H, 1C and get
3D, 3H, 2 ruffs and 2 spades against some soft defense.
The hand is quite suit oriented because the value in majors are all slow.
even if pd has a club stopper, opps may take 5 tricks before you develop
9 tricks.
