West led DT. There were 11 obvious winners. When do you want to take finesse
in S? At early round to see West reaction, or later round to find out hand
shape/discards first?

Against decent opps, taking finesse right away shouldn't work well because
dummy is quite exposed and opps is likely to know that the key to this hand
is to induce a misguess in S. Also, against decent opps, I don't think you
can gather a lot of information on the spade position.
Anyway, you can certainly draw trumps (assuming it is 2-2) and cash H, D. In
that case you may make it when RHO holds stiff S honor.
If there is no much information, you should probably finesse SJ, because
with SA, many players may tend to cash and hope to hit partner's SK against
small slams.

It also depends on the system. For many players, this sequence (Stayman
followed by 4C) suggests 4 spades in addition to 5+ clubs, so opponents won'
t be pressured to jump SA. However, this pair is probably doing something
strange, since they respond 3H with only 2 hearts. Maybe their 3C isn't even
stayman?

I thought so too - many bridge books talking about good players delaying a
finesse as much as possible. But here JEC decided on an early finesse. After
winning !c and drawing trumps in 2 rounds, he played a small s from hand. E
was caught by surprise. After a noticable delay, he played small. But the
damage was done. JEC played sK and claimed.
the hand record below:

Now if your thinking about it, isn't actually better to finesse early if
there is no other way to make? Even an average player would know a finesse
is coming with only 3-4 cards left - he will duck smoothly. But if you
finesse early, he might not be prepared yet. If he thinks and plays small,
then he has the A.

His opp doesn't look like a very strong player.

I guess the point is, it doesn't hurt to try. If LHO ducks smoothly, you
still have 50-50 shot. If LHO is not prepared, you may gain valuable
information. You give up the small chance of RHO holding singleton honor in
S, but this may be more than compensated by the chance that you catch LHO
off guard.
This is a different situation than missing only Queen. If you are trying to
find the queen (say you can finesse either way), then distributional
information is much more relevant.

This play is actually quite against my principle in bridge. I prefer "fast
and bad" to "slow and stupid".
