used to be weekly. :-)
Back to the hand, obviously there is no need to duck this trick. I win HJ
then play D8 to cut off communications. Partner has to have a diamond honor
to beat the contract. I think playing a club is fine as well, playing a
spade may put our side under unnecessary pressure when declarer has SK and

When you win HJ, dummy discards a C, and partner follows. Is the C discard
affect your decision?

suit. Maybe declarer is 2-5-6-0 shape? Since a club has been pitched,
returning a club will be safe regardless. Partner can win CK and play a
diamond back.

didn't.
Actually, dummy discards S2, and partner follows H2.
The declarer is not a world star, but is a very reasonable player. So you
can expect H9 is not a novice play.
After you win HJ, you are not going to play H, I believe. S, D, or C? It
seems you like D better?

Declarer plays SQ, partner wins SK, and declarer discards a D. Do you have
better idea for declarer's hand?
Yes, 0571 with stiff CK.
Partner could return a C, but that seems too hard for him. He returned a D,
and declarer had to give up a club, but still scored 10 tricks.
How do you think about the H9 play now? :)
