And understanding != you can find new/exciting things.
The main problem is what is the most effecient way to get into one field/one
problem. From my experience, if you want to build some background knowledge,
it is better to read some jounal articles/Ph.D thesis. Then you can read some
latest conference/workshop papers to know the state of the art.

1) triangle,
this type of researchers own solid backgound and very acute
sense of creativity. Newton, Einstein, Gauss are among this category.
For them, Reading --> Understanding --> creating something new.
2) diamand,
weak background but very acute creativity. Creating things without
much reading.
3) trapezia, solid background, but not very smart,
Reading --> Understanding --> sometimes create something.
