the reputation of those schools in US.

all the schools you listed, UMD is better but database area is monopolized by
Greek people, that is, it is hard for a chinese to break in if you eventually
want a faculty position. Why not try UIUC Professor Han's group? Of course, if
you have any offer from MIT, Stanford, CMU, Berkeley, UIUC, then it trumps all
other offers in whatever computer science area.
By the way, anyone knows the VLDB accept rate for past few

it's true at CMU :)

work on. Below are just based on what I can remember.
Michigan:
Jagadish has worked on XML and on sabbatical now. Not sure what his next topic
will be. Jignesh Patel works on XML and bioinformatics, as I remember. No
other true db faculty (whose work appear in SIGMOD/VLDB/ICDE frequently), as I
remember.
GaTech:
Ling Liu works on Web information integration. Calton Pu, not sure what he is
working on. Cannot remember ot

For database, Stanford and Wisconsin are traditionally the best. MIT is
traditionally weak. Washington and Cornell are as good as CMU/Berkeley/UIUC in
terms of general school/cs ranking and database research. Purdue, Michigan,
UCSD, Columbia, OHSU (OGI), Maryland, and UPenn also have very good database
groups and are very comparable to the above ones.
